Which way for this seal

This is a seal in fwd of Ford 1910. The instructions say install with the quote: sheet iron side toward mud and water. That is the gold side in photo. The black side is rubber coated and has the lip. The old one had black side out. Backwards from what they say. It also was leaking. I'm assuming the sheet iron side is the metal side and goes out, sealing 90w in hub.

gold side outward. the lips always go to the oil side on all seals. and yes old one was backwards.

Normally, the ''garter spring'' side faces the liquid being sealed.

If it has TWO garter springs it would be less obvious.

Does it have only one, or a garter spring on both sides?

''It turns inside its self.''

That would seem to indicate it is a unitized seal and wear ring assembly, on the order of a Stemco truck axle seal.

Yup gold side out and as for the spring you will not be able to see a spring as it is inside of the seal with those turning inside of them selves. Good seal if installed right. They want to go in even as they are installed.
