Chopping barley silage

Helping family on the Mason Dixon line chop barley silage. Using a 20 ft discbine head on a Deere 6810 chopper using a side dump wagon. Field will be planted to soybeans tomorrow.

I was expecting a 3020 with a 12 chopper behind...

And I'm surprised how far along the barley is before chopping.

There will be some 12 pics chopping oats in a month or so. This is fall planted barley. In the Mid-Atlantic area barley is fall planted. This is being chopped in the soft dough stage. It feeds much like corn silage but is lower in energy. Makes a great dry cow and heifer feed. This farm custom feeds about 1200 head of Holstein heifers. Tom
