Gasket material

I've used thin cardboard to make gaskets for sealing parts where oil would leak, but what can be used for coolant? I ordered a water pump from All States, the guy who took my order said all the gaskets should come with it. I just opened the box. They didn't.

Cereal box cardboard saturated with a drying oil (boiled linseed or tung oil are what I've used) and allowed to dry have worked for me, but it takes a while for the oil to polymerize. In a hurry-up situation, the same type of cardboard completely coated with gasket cement or even pipe joint compound usually works.

I just bought an assortment of gasket material last week, haven't opened it yet. It has several types from cork to whatever. I should get to the project this weekend. Someone (?) posted that spent shells make good punches for the holes. Wish you luck. joe

set of leather punches from Harbor Freight is ten bucks.

Well they should have , BUT now a days who knows . Go to O'reiley's and get a roll of the heavy gasket paper made by cough choke Fel Pro and shell out 15 and change for it . or order off amazon and save 7 to ten bucks with free shipping .

napa or whom ever is in that business should have gasket material in packages just like sheets of sand paper and there is different thicknesses. plus it also comes in rolls and they sell what you want. a water pump does not take a thick gasket. dont use cornflakes boxes. not the same stuff. just replaced the water pump on my 560 and i made the gasket. gaskets are a minor deal in my world. it takes sissors and a small hammer and a hole punch.

Parts box may have a false bottom inside of box, see if there is a loose piece, gaskets might be under it.

As others have mentioned, your favorite auto parts store should have various gasket material available.

Another option is Permatex anaerobic gasket maker. Red jelly like in a tube. Forms a thin flexible film between the parts. Any excess that squeezes out does not harden.

I have had problems in the past with water pump gaskets turning to mush. I really like "High Tack" aerosol gasket sealer from Permatex. You spray it onto the gasket and also the mating surfaces where practical. It will absorb into the material which of course helps to keep it from absorbing water. Sometimes I apply two coats.

Nope. The big gasket that goes between the pump and block is in there, but there are supposed to be three more gaskets and an o ring that he said should be there that isn't. I'll go to the auto parts store and see what Jeff has.

Jeff had a 4 pack of different sheets. Three of them are listed for oil, coolant and gasoline. I'll make them.
