Bought a 1939 B today and after we had it on trailer he let me know the PTO doesn t work. Is it safe to leave it as is? The lever just swings side to side like it s not attached to anything. I don t need a PTO and I don t really want to take it all apart if I don t have to. It s just a parade/fair tractor.

Is it safe to leave as is? My research shows that its time consuming to do anything with PTO, so if transmission isnt at risk Im not going to bother

I bought a 1941 B cheap on an online auction. The only comment about it was tranny is trash. Got it
started, runs nice, drives nice, does not smoke. The only thing wrong was the PTO would not turn off. The
PTO lever would just swing back and forth. After removing the back cover and PTO shaft I could see the
lever forks were not engaged to shift it in and out of gear. All I had to do was lift up the PTO lever it
is just spring loaded down and while holding it up swing it one way or the other then let it go back
down. That puts the shifting fork back into place to move the collar back and forth to shift it in and out
of gear. Try that, it may be an easy fix without taking it apart. Good luck!

Have you checked/changed the rear end/transmission oil? In my opinion, that is a must. Second, if your tractor has a flat back and you have drained the oil in rear end, its not a big deal to take the rear plate off and take a look. Then you know what you have and can see if there are any other issues. Be careful taking off the plate so you can reuse the gasket.
