What about it? John Deere produced snowmobiles from 1972 to 1984. My kid got a 400 from a neighbor in the early 2000s, he never would focus on his school studies so he was never allowed much time to mess with it. I think he did have it running one time and went up and down the block a couple times. I always thought it was a heavy beast.

(quoted from post at 21:12:00 05/07/23) They are all heavy and they get a lot heavier when you get stuck in waste deep snow
400s were not too heavy compared to the newer liquid cooled machines. A friend and I made many hundreds of miles back in the late seventies and 1980s. He on his 400 and me on my Kawasaki Sno Jet 340. My brother had a 340 JD Cyclone. A bit heavier machine. Back in the days when $1500 would buy a decent new snow machine.

I have a 300. My neighbor had a 400.

I would always beat him in races. He fiddled with the carb and so on, he was kinda miffed.

He never read the manual......

The 400 was geared lower for pulling a sled, the 300 was always going to be a bit faster.

Dont think I ever told him that......

My dad bought a new silver coloured JD sled to go ice fishing with. I cant remember if it was a 400 or 440, I didnt think it was crazy heavy. The tunnel was all Aluminum. Dad and a retired friend went ice fishing everyday except Sunday, all winter. Dad really enjoyed that big stable snowmobile, said it felt like riding on a stone boat. Never felt like it was going to flip over and dump him off. I think it cost him $2,600.00 brand new

Oh yes so true so heavy, Ski Doo Olympics 300 twin steel tunnel, naughty words by a young teenager when you are alone on the other side of the farm lol

I had a black JDX4 Special. Still do for that matter. The remains of it are buried under some junk in the corner of a lean to.

I went to high school with 3 sons of the local JD dealership owner. The oldest crashed his snow mobile into a concrete box culvert at a high speed. Nearly killed him. He refuse to sell any snow mobiles after that.

John Deere factory teams dominated cross country racing for 2-3 years. I had five sleds in my later years from 1998 to 2022. All but the first were liquid, the last was a 140 HP turbo-charged four stroke. The turbo four stroke is heavy at over 500 lbs fueled, yet it feels incredibly light flying along tight twisting trails through the woods. I don't recall ever getting it stuck.

About 1978 I bought a new JD 440 Liquifire. It was FAST and fun. But it sure was heavy. It was a trouble free machine.

Must be an up North term. We call them snowmobiles in Wisconsin. My friend in Alaska calls them snow machines. I prefer summer sports.
