What size disk

I currently pull a 13' AW JD disk with a JD 5510 (89 hp) FWA. Obviously plays with it. I'm adding a 4020 power shift to the stable so now have two tractors that will handle more than 13'. My question is what size disk will work with either of these tractors? I don't want to max out, I like being able to run as much ground speed as conditions allow. Also, the AW is a wonderful piece but wouldn't mind something a bit more aggressive. So any thoughts welcome that will increase productivity while keeping the temp gauge where it belongs.

If the 4020 has 34 rears it will spin without duals with an aggressive disc over
14. 16 disc on a 4020 with duals is very common

i would say 16-18 foot for that h.p. i am discing now with a john deere 110 14 foot fully deepend to the spools with a 75 h.p. cockshutt
1755 in 4 th gear, and wish i had a 16 foot.

Thanks, kept the 13 because a 3020 was the backup, which was a great fit. But 3020 is traded for 4020 so thinking a 16 foot should be a good match. Like the IH 400 series but we ll see what comes up.

Pulled an 18 foot John Deere bwa tandem manual
fold wings with the wings down with my 4020
notched blades front and rear to the spools in 4th
gear and just played with it .

It depends a lot on the disk. IF you get a sunflower I think you will find the extra weight of the disk will limit your width pretty fast. IF you want an aggressive disk the sunflower is it. You can turn cor ground into a seed bed in one or 2 passes and sod in 2 it would be a bit rough but it would not look like sod anymore. If let to stand for a couple days would look like a seed bed on the 3rd pass on the sod. Disk will weigh about a half to twice what most disks will. it will be level when done too.

I think my 14 ft Burch disk is a perfect match with my 4020. Fluid in tires but no duals. I can pull a cultipacker behind easily
now but if I tried to go to a 16 ft with a roller it would be too much on plowed ground, loose sand, and wet spots. With duals you
would probably want a 16 ft disk.

It is going to depend on the disk, a finishing disk with narrow spacing or a more aggressive tillage disk with big
blades and wider spacing. Also depends in fall on fairly hard ground is easy, in spring on loose ground takes more.

For what you are asking and assuming the disk type you are looking for I would think a 16-20 foot would fit your
needs. As others say.

I pulled a 20 foot John Deere letter disk with an 85 hp tractor for a lot of years and got along good.
