Year a round cab blower control

Working on getting the blower working on my year around cab. Pulled the unit our, and have the fan working. I would like to replace the blower switch, which is a rheastat. It smokes when the blower runs slow. Not sure what I'm supposed to be buying for it. There is just one wire in to switch, and one wire out. Advice is appreciated!

Rheostats are variable resistors. All resistors that dissipate substantial power get hot. If the control and motor have not been operating for a year or so it is likely just dust burning off of the element. You can't hurt it because you were ready to buy a new one. Make sure nothing is flamable near it and let it smoke a bit. Jim

When you slow down the fan the resistor/rheostat converts power to heat and will smoke if there's dust or dirt on it from not being used for a while, no need to replace it on that basis. A new one will smoke at first because of oil left on the resistive element from the manufacturing process.

Unless it's infinitely variable, it's probably not a rheostat, but is actually a bank of resistors.

The switch determines how many resistors the power goes through before it goes to the fan motor. 0 resistors is high speed, all the resistors is low speed.

How many speeds is it? You may need to go with a generic switch and a separate resistor bank, which is better because you can mount that in the air duct near the motor to keep it cool on lower speeds.
