Ford 801 Powermaster - starter engages when key is turne

Ford 801 Powermater tractor w/ 6 volt electrical system. Just replaced the 4-post 6V solenoid but when I turn the key the starter engages. Looking for tips to help trouble shoot my problem. Thank you.

What was the original reason for replacing the solenoid?

MOST likely, you bought and installed the WRONG solenoid.

What is the source/make and part number of the solenoid you installed?

Solenoids that look the same on the outside can be wired differently inside.

Likely, you have installed a ''Type 3'' solenoid on a machine that requires a ''Type 4'' solenoid.

Hello TB welcome to YT! All sorts of people post here
to ask questions, so on our end the level of mechanical
or in this case electrical knowledge is unknown. You at
least have the ability to swap out a starter solenoid in
the physical sense anyway. My question is can you
make any sense of the diagrams wore out posted or do
they seem like another language to you?

Yes, most likely you have the wrong solenoid. Normally the 801 will not crank until you supply the ground that the solenoid needs by pressing the start button. Some solenoids ground through their mount when you screw them down.

As others said, might be the wrong Relay (Solenoid) but I would advise to go thru the entire wiring system as well. The original SOL/RELAY part number is 311007, a 4-
Terminal Post unit. Here's a LINK...

Question 1:
The previous solenoid was just clicking when I hit the starter button and it would not engage the starter.

Question 2:
The solenoid is an aftermarket solennoid that I purchased form the local New Holland / Ford tractor ag dealership near my local town. The part number for the solenoid is "ATL 311007". The manufacturer was J&N Inc.

Thank you for your input!

I understand from the diagrams the old Ford solenoids can have some different wiring configurations but that's about the extent of my knowledge. I'm an old farm boy who's good at swapping out parts. LOL.

11007 looks correct. Verify that the wire from neutral safety start switch is not shorted to ground and that the neutral safety switch is open as it sits at rest. Try removing from that solenoid terminal and see what happens.....should not engage starter when key on.

I purchased another 6-volt solenoid on-line and it worked great! The starter did not engage when I turned the key on. The starter only engaged when I pushed the starter button like it's suppose to. Thank you for all your help. Even though the previous solenoid I purchased had the right part number associated with it. Apparently it was the wrong one. I really like this forum for getting help. If I did not have this forum to help trouble shoot my problem I would be still struggling with it. Thanks again!!!!!!!!
