Hydrolic pump

My 1949 john deere a has a live
hydrolic pump between the governor and
the distributor. We got it cleaned and
working but it has a slow leak between
the distributor and the pump. Is there
supposed to be a gasket in between or
what?.

Yes, gasket p/n A5272R.

The oil leak is from the pump seal at the distributor end of the pump, p/n AA5616R which has been superseded by AH21815. The seal at the governor end of the pump should probably be replaced too while you have the pump disassembled, p/n AA5613R.

Ok, thank you. We replaced both seals in the pump but there was still a little leak. We weren't sure if there was a gasket for it. I will get one soon. How about in side the pump. There are three main parts to the housing and there were no gaskets in between and it seemed a little odd. So is there supposed to between 2 more gaskets on the inside?

There's not supposed to be any gaskets between the 3 parts of the housing. Use a very thin coat of
gasket shellac between the 3 parts.

The original seals were 1/2'' wide with 2 lips and they are no longer available. Replacement seals
are 1/4'' wide and have only 1 lip. At both ends you should install 2 seals with the garter springs
facing AWAY from each other. The outer seals keep air from getting into the pump and the inner seals
keep oil from getting out of the pump. Did you install the seals this way?

If you have to replace the seals I have some part numbers for commercial seals that I can give you.

We had to replace them 2 times because the first time, we had them in wrong but now we got them in right the second. I will replace that gasket but if it still leaks, it is probably because it is an old pump.
