Thermostat Question

Is this installed correctly? Showing side goes in to the block. It fits good this way, it flops around the other way. Thanks,Chris

Looks correct to me. Just a side note, if it is possible for coolant to leak by where that brass flange edge looks to be missing it could keep the engine from coming up to temp as quickly as it might otherwise.
 
some newer thermostats actually have a small hole drill in the edge... to allow a bit of coolant to flow... This... lets out all air, allows just a bit of flow, so that there are NO hot spots before the temp reaches 160 degrees or set temp. This way the temp is even all over the engine as it warms up. Otherwise the areas around the cyl will get really hot before the pellet senses the temp to open. This also helps stop the ping pong effect as well.

I saw the area (I think) you are talking about, looks like some gasket sealant or other material on top on an intact flange to me.

On the other hand, the type of replacement thermostat the O.P. is working with has two large bypass ports opposite of each other on the other side of the brass adapter, you can see one in the photo above.
