Unstyled B JD

I saw an unstyled B John Deere the other day that is coming up at a local auction. I went to look at it and it is not stuck. I did not try to start it as no one was around. It had no petcocks so it really turned hard. Is this a certain year that this is the case? What was the reason for this? Was this the same era as the "open fan shaft"
[u:142f6b27f2][b:142f6b27f2]IFFFFF[/b:142f6b27f2][/u:142f6b27f2] I bought this tractor, could I take the block off drill them in? Is there a "jerry rig" to accomplish this without disassembly? All thoughts are welcome. Any ideas on a fair price to pay?

I seen an unstyled B on steel front and
back, engine free, that looked complete,
didn't run, sold as is at auction for
$1,000 or $1,100. Can't remember which.
That was about a year and a half ago. I
thought that was a little cheap. But a good
crowd was in attendance that day, so must
of been the market for it at the time. I
doubt the market has changed much from then
till now.

If no petcocks was some sort of an early
production thing John Deere did on the B's,
you might think twice about what your
wanting to do. Especially if that is
considered rare. Adding petcocks would
actually be de-valueing the tractor then,
if that is the case.

There were no petcocks on the unstyled Bs. Maybe in 38 there were I dont remember. If it is turning that hard must have issues. Open fanshafts were on the As not the Bs

JD didn't put petcocks on the Bs until they styled them in 38' and gave them more horsepower by increasing the displacement which naturally made the engine more difficult to turn over by hand. We have a 1937 BN and I could turn it over and start it myself by the time I was
10. If its turning over hard, you either need to bulk up or figure out why its turning over hard.

you need that compression to start them. they are small pistons.so if its turning hard as you say its either the compression or rusty
cylinders.it cant be turnind hard all the was around? when was it last run? the D and G had petcocks. , you have a lot more engine to turn
over there. and with a battery you dont need to open them.
