John Deere A high compression piston rings

In the process of rebuiling the engine on my 51' A. I just had the blocked bored .125 over and bought some brand new high compression M and W style pistons from lind bros tractor parts to put in it. The problem is the rings did not come in the labeled paper bags like some kits. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that the straight cut piston ring goes on top and the grooved oil ring goes on the bottom. Im not sure of the order of the rest fo the rings, does anyone by chance know the order of them for this particular piston set? I know that the side with the dot faces up on the piston but am still unsure of of the order of the rings. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Collin

Them pistons should have been at the machinist to have the final hone to fit. Post a pic of each ring. And its pretty obvious which is the oil ring.

They were at the machinist but he didn't fit the rings on them. Here is a picture of the set of rings.

my experience is the bright one on top of your pile would be top groove, made to withstand the heat from combustion, the others with the exception of the oil ring would go in the other grooves in no specific order, and no need to go to a machine shop with them just put in the cyl, square in the bore by pushing a piston top down in the cyl, and file ring gap to your needs. Make sure to file both ends of the ring not just one side.

cant tell a thing with them thrown on a pile. i need to see the ends on each ring seperately. who is assembling this engine?

thats right, he will not fit the rings unless you told him to do so. but the pistons need to be fit to the bore without the rings. then u mark each piston for each bore. then u check the rings in the bore for end clearance. you need .003 - .004 per inch of cylinder bore. chrome rings go in the top groove, oil ring is the bottom groove. plus u the oil ring is wider than compression rings. the dots go to the top on compression rings . if no dots then they have chamfers. inside chamfer would be up. that is why i need to see the ends of the rings.the rings need to be staggered. it appears this is your first engine job, as i can tell just by the ring picture. an experienced guy would have known exactly why the question was asked if he was not sure on ring placement. i cant give good info with out any info back.

If they are all rectangular, it doesnt matter. Chrome on top, oil on the bottom and the rest either side up if they have no dots.

My dog dont bite. Ha ha. Where I am she is. Might bite ur leg though . You must have a thorn in your back side from too much chair time. Can u give the correct ring orientation from that ring pile ???I was quite amazed when I saw that photo, like really.
