1939 John Deere H Radiator Shutter

I m working on a JD 39 H and have a question about the radiator shutter. This on has horizontal fins. All the other JD shutters I have seen are vertical. It fits well and doesn t seem like a hack job. Wondering if someone has an idea of what I have. Also thought this year would have a cloth curtain instead of a shutter. Any ideas?

I think the H parts catalog shows both shutters and curtains available starting with the first H,
ser# 1000.
Your shutters look to be a well made aftermarket item.

My 1940 H has vertical shutters, have never seen horizontal ones on any JD tractors, B, D, A, etc. Canvas curtains were an option from the
start of production as far as I know. I suspect the factory used what ever they had.

Has anyone ever ran their H on kerosene or tractor fuel? Do you need the curtain or shutters to get it warm enough first??Cleddy

Never seen anything like that and it doesn't look home-built. Mine has shutters. The shell looks like it was formed in a die. That would be a good
subject for further research.

(quoted from post at 06:56:11 03/09/23) In your two photos it looks like there may be a mfg tag centered at the top. Probably the aftermarket company.

Thanks, I ll take it off and see. Laid up for a few days but will get after it and post a picture of it off the tractor.

Thanks for the responses. I would think that the curtain would be correct for this year but maybe there wasn t a hard date/SN# where they switched to shutters.

Sounds like you have something unique there. For that reason alone I'd leave it on there, especially if you can find out the background info in it.
It's always kind of cool to have something that no one else has!

I have ran mine on both kerosene and #2 diesel fuel. The H ran good on both, but my A did not like the diesel very well, it liked the kerosene. Closing the shutters helps to get it warmed up quicker especially if you are not doing work with it.

OK, just trying to tie up the loose ends. After disassembly, it looks like the shutter was manufactured by BCT Moto Gard. I think it may have been for a truck and was repurposed on the tractor.
Thanks for all the input.
