power steering pump

It is most likely an Eaton PS pump. Ford used them on almost everything. I have an old Mercury PS on my NAA. Most difference will be the brackets and reservor. Just use your old stuff. Also do not pay that much for the filter, local parts store can get them. joe

Joe, the one that came off says "thompson product inc. P 1072 on front of casing , on inside pump says P 1079 under that is MD2??????????

I bought a 1955 Ford 960 last spring. It had a leaky power steering pump which was an Eaton pump as Joe had described. I
went through quite a learning experience trying to identify the pump and find parts. I found that Eaton had made similar
pumps that were used for Ford tractors as well as for Ford, Studebaker, AMC and other brands of cars and trucks. The major
differences that I noticed was that the reservoir on the Ford 960 tractor pump was mounted to the body of the pump at an
angle (not on a horizontal surface). I'm guessing that the pump was especially made for the Ford tractors because of where
it was mounted under the edge of the fuel tank. The rebuild parts for the tractor pump seemed to be the same as those for Ford cars and trucks of the same vintage.

Apparently the Thompson 1072 pumps have been used on other Ford Tractors. I don't know if they were ever original equipment, add-on kits, or just used as replacements.

On my 960 the Eaton power steering pump was really crammed into the front corner of the tractor. I can't even imagine how a person would deal with making brackets to fit some other model into such a tight space. If your old pump functioned, perhaps it could be rebuilt? Searching the internet, there seem to be places that specialize in rebuilding pumps for vintage vehicles. Perhaps they could provide some suggestions.

Do you know or anybody on the forum know where i can buy a P 1072 thompson power steering pump. New or used? gary

This thread is getting some age on it.

The Thompson Products power steering pumps have been discussed several times on this site. One earlier thread included
pictures that showed both the Thompson and Eaton pumps.

I am not familiar with the Thompson Products Co power steering pumps, so I did some research. Thompson Products Co was incorporated in 1901. In 1958 it was merged into Thompson Ramo Woolridge (later shortened to TRW Inc.)

I would suspect that a pump labeled Thompson Products P-1072 was not made much after the 1958 merger. Somewhat similar looking TRW power steering pumps were used by a number of automotive companies from the late 1950's through the 1970's. It appears that most of the later pumps had higher pressure and/or volume than were used in the early Ford tractors.

I found some information a Cardon 96-6051 power steering pump is nearly identical to the Eaton pumps used on Ford tractors, but a person would need to find a reservoir and mounting bracket from an original Eaton pump to use the Cardon.
