Follow up on International 686 vs John Deere 4030

About 2 months back I had a lot of good input on this but I
decided to go with the one owner 686 with the d312 engine.
This tractor was bought at a dealer 3 miles from my house
and has never left the original owners farm about a mile
from where I Iive. I have every receipt and even the mail in
rebate from international harvester when bought new. Also
came with factory duals. The suitcase weights were stolen
years back unfortunately. I even have the receipt for the
year round cab. The gentleman bought this tractor new
when he turned 18 in 1978 I really felt like the torch was
being passed to me on this one. I also have the fenders for
the tractor and plan on removing the cab. Even the pto and
alternator shield are still attached, I understand most
tractors have lost those over the years. I figured for those
who took the time to give their input deserved to know
which tractor made the cut.

Vert nice addition. it will serve. Both of the choices weregood, I think you made the correct choice because of its known history and linkage to your area. Jim

You got yourself a very good tractor. Should have many, many years of service. Great choice, especially with the 312 diesel.

fine looking tractor! You may want to use it for a season before you take the cab off. I have several Y-A-R cabs on (mostly) haying tractors that keep me a lot more comfortable Vs out in the sun/wind. I take the doors off and open the windows- comfortable even w/o air conditioning. If that cab is as good as the rest of the tractor looks, shouldn't be too noisy.

Take the doors off and the windows out before removing the cab. That way makes a great sunshade in summer and put them back in for winter and keep out of the wind.

Nice looking tractor. I agree with the others who say to leave the cab on if you are going to use it for field work.

Its my understanding that some of these older IH diesels have a huge issue with parts for the injector pump. Or is that just the case with German diesels?

My wife's grandfather had a 686 with the not german Diesel he bought new. I only got to drive it a time or 2 and thought it was a decent tractor. He only had about 1700ish hours on it as he only plowed and disc'ed and picked corn with it. after he passed her grandmother sold it to someone they knew but i don't know who off hand. I suspect she gave it away. I have the IH windbreak he had for it and the tire chains since they were still there when we bought the farmstead.

we were able to buy his IH 444 he also bought new as her grandma didn't sell that. was going to see if i can make the tire chains work on the 444 by shortening them up. Don't know if i can get the windbreaker to fit the 444 so i may sell it.

Why does everyone always want to remove those cabs? even the nice ones.I guess they have never sat out 8-10 hours a day in the cold spring winds.AS said, remove the doors/windows and sit in the shade.I still have and use a SuperM that I would love to have a cab on.

Nice tractor.I have a 1976 triple six with the D312.Basically same tractor...they are good machines.Bought mine with around 3200 hours. Its all original except for rear wheels and tires.I relocated the batteries as I didn't like where the factory put them.

I have two other really nice tractors with cabs with A/C and heat. Plus nice jensen radios. So Id like to have a nice open tractor for grinding feed and using when the weather is nice, thats why the cab is coming off.

Word is Neuss built engine with matching pump can be
difficult to find injection parts for. Hoping others
will give more detailed response. Lots of parts for
IH 300 series, how much horsepower do you want ?!

The German Neuss engines with the Bosch VA rotary pump is the problem pump as few hard parts are available. I still go through a few each year for leaks, seal kits so far are still available. The AR and BR versions have angled injection outlets, the CR has straight outlets. The latest Neuss engines now use the Bosch VE rotary pump which will replace the AR, BR, and CR, but good luck finding one as they are scarce.
