Hydraulic pump horsepower.

Just a curiosity question. What horsepower do you think it takes to run a hydraulic pump on a Massey Harris 55 gas tractor just in neutral. Not lifting or lowering or running any hydraulic equipment.

It's been a while but I think the formula was input Hp required = Flow (gpm) x Pressure (psi) x 0.0007 Example: 15 gpm x 2000 psi x 0.0007= 21 Hp

1/3 to 1/2 HP. Note: this is describing an open center hydraulic system with no restrictions just flow, near zero pressure. Jim

If it's a vintage pump, it should be the low pressure unit, at least mine were. To lift even a moderate load, one needs to use the old style large bore cylinders. Not sure of the pressure rating, 1250 psi comes to mind. With no load, only the pump gear and internals are turning, flow is not impeded so hp draw would be very low.

Hi Janicholson. Not sure if its open center or not. I was assuming that its moving oil all the time through the whole system. Low pressure for sure until you move the lever. Probably low horsepower use for sure. Thanks for the reply.
