I am pretty excited for my new-to-me truck

I bought this 2000 frieghtliner FL70 with 8.3 Cummins and 9 speed last fall. It had a heavy spring ride under it, and was absolutely terrifying to drive bobtail on rough roads. I fixed that yesterday. It took drilling 8- 3/4" holes 16- 5/8 holes through the frame. As a bonus, the new rear axle has differential lock. My 1 ton dually will breathe a sigh of relief.

Nice.. I have a Sterling single axle that I use for goose necks and a drop deck,,much tuffer than any pick up will ever be,,and a fraction of the cost..

Is it safe to drill a frame? Most I have seen have a warning
sticker saying not to drill heat tested frame.

You can't drill or weld on the frame flanges.New glider kits come with 20 or so feet of bare frame behind the cabs, they have to get drilled to mount everything up.

Center web of the frame can be drilled. The OEMs have published vehicle completion manuals that detail what is allowed. Axle mounts will typically fall within those rules.

My freightliner is gonna have Volvo parts. I gotta cut the hole slightly wider.

Here s pics of the axle fitted up. The guy that s working with me on it says all holes must be plugged, so I still gotta fill them in.

That short wheel base and single axle will never ride good. If you were to just remove a leaf or 2 in the springs it would ride better. Also now that you have put the air ride axle under it you are now liable for any problems that arise in an accident as that is considered manufacturing. An Air ride cab would be more helpful for the ride than the axle.

It has an air ride seat and air ride suspension. Compared to a Ford F-350 dually, I think it will ride nice. There is a $1300 kit I have seen that replaces the rear cab mounts for air bags. I may get that if I think it needs improvement. That is for another time.

Changing the suspension was more for safety while bobtailing. There was way too much bounce when there was no weight on back.
