Italian Tractors

Neat. Why is it that some moldboards on plows are made so much different then what we are use here? Aren't we all after the same end results. You would think when one manufacturer came up with the best shape that would have spread around the world within a year.

WOW!. I enjoyed every minute of it. Some of those old ''smokers'' would probably get one a little ''gassed up'' by the end of a day with no wind blowing. (;>)) Thank you for posting.

Even though not asked, (;>)) I will offer some views. It really depends on what you're turning over. Heavy trash like cornstalks, or old alfalfa sod, or short corn stubble, etc. and what you want the field to look like afterward. When I was in school studying Agriculture this ranged from a nice evenly plowed and completely turned over field with no trash showing to the new idea of leaving a trashy appearance to prevent erosion. Particularly if plowing in the fall and waiting until spring for any additional tillage. I remember John Deere offering different style bottoms and moldboards to accomplish different styles of plowing. Now, they don't even make a moldboard plow. Some, around here in Central Siberia, liked the Kverneland style as it did a nice complete job of rolling over just about anything. My organic neighbors use two big moldboard plows and plow as fast as they can and then work once and plant to beat the weeds. Otherwise, I don't see any moldboard plowing anymore. Times do change but in some ways they come back at you. I know a farmer in Illinois who had been comletely no-till farming for over 25 years and now he's back to moldboard plowing. Ten inches deep, to get all the fertilizer he's been applying over the years down to where the plants can get to it. Particularly P & K.

Europe probably lost a lot of research and development time of everything, during the war years. During those years the US gave a lot to those counties, but it doesn't look like any tractors. Stan

I am going to say some of those bigger plow bottoms were for either breaking new ground or for dep plowing where they need to pull clay or sand up from below sand or clay to keep it from blowing washing fertilizer or other nutrients down through the soil fast. Like SW TX they use a big disc about 5 foot in diameter to pull the clay up from below to help keep the sand from blowing doing it every so often not every year. There are also some deep plowing plows for similar reasons or for drainage.

The deep plowing is done mainly in the Po river valley, in Italy.
Other parts of Italy are also plowing deeper than most countries, due to cultural reasons and relatively small farms that have plenty of time to do it and farmers that like to work their tractor out while reducing their soil to crap.
Here most peoples still plow, but some are doing minimum tillage or no till.

Wow, nice video! I really love that smaller green diesel tractor with the front fenders and running boards! Lots of interesting machines.
