Wondering if they ever made a New Holland 404 hay crusher (crimper) with both steel rollers or were all made with 1 steel and 1 rubber.

I have a 400-440 and it's two smooth steel rolls. Hasn't been used in a long time and I can't seem to give it away, going for scrap.

Dad had a new holland 404 (i think was the number) that had two steel intermeshing rollers that really did a number on heavy clover and actually any kind of hay. Shortened curing time substantially.I think a 402 was a crusher with smooth rollers and the 404 a crimper. My numbers couldbe backwards. Been a long time

I ran many acres using a New Holland 404 crusher, we had 2 of them. It had a steel roll on top and rubber roll on bottom that was checkered. The New Holland 402 was a crimper with intermeshing steel rollers. Don't miss them days!

Thanks for the replies everyone. Mine has a steel and a rubber checkered bottom roller. Someone told me that it should have two steel rollers but I couldn't see where anything had ever been replaced so I thought I would ask.

i got a f.w.cunningham hay crusher, gave $5. at neighbors sale. spent $125 on it n used it hard.new bearings u joints n it still gets used behind mower conditioner in sudan. shre speeds up drying so the leaves dont crumble into dust before stalk is ready to bale

Ran a John Deere crusher years ago with both steel roles. Had a logging chain slide off the floor of the tractor and go through it. Sure made a racket. Nothing hurt other than the chain had some nicks.

If there was two steel rolls, then the New Holland rubber adhering process failed and the rubber came off of the steel roller. Just look at a used New Holland haybine, the rubber rollers all come apart.

My Uncle had one 40-50? years ago the we shared with him before we got our own crimper that we think did a better job of cracking the stems. When dealer brought it out it was made in conjunction with a bar mower but as he did not want the mower they had taken the bar off, It was fastened to tractor same as a semi mount mower. They hooked it to his WD Allis and he just about lost the outfit, could not control it sticking that far behind the tractor. They took it back and unhooked the mower part and put on a standard hitch and was used by both him and Dad for a few years. I do not remember what the rollers in that New Holland was, He bought it new. I do know that steel rollers do have to have bars welded on or cast in to be able to pick up the hay, smooth will not grasp the hay to pull it thru. So question of you that had steel rollers in them were they smooth like if the rubber had come off or were there steel bars on the rollers to grab the hay to pull it thru and also to crack the stems? So are your steel rollers just a smooth round pipe or do they have bars on them, if bars then it came with steel but if no bars then it came with rubber and lost the rubber?
