Yes, it is a full time 4x4, at least on the earliest models. The 4x4 gearbox gets its power directly from a triple sprocket that fits to the intermediate shaft between the transmission and the rear axle. As long as either one of those is turning, so is the gearbox via a triple chain from that sprocket, down the driveshaft to the ring and pinion and out to the wheels.

The later designed gearboxes added an adjustment nut on the back of the box that allowed you to disengage an internal clutch pack (the relocated ''torque limiter'' assembly) to take it out of gear.

On earlier configurations you could use aftermarket lock-out hubs to disengage the wheels (Vintage Power Wagons sells them), but the driveshaft and axle gears will still spin.
