I have a johndeer 4039 engine on an air compressor engine will start and idle down if I hold starter button in but dies when I let go Is there a kill switch on it or is the green wire to injection pump causing the problem

Possibly a low oil pressure shutdown? We had a compressor with a JD engine at work, it was a great machine.

Not familiar with your particular engine,
but my experience with compressors is
there's usually more than one Murphy switch
which are bypassed while cranking.

I agree, probably a safety shut off switch.

Low oil pressure, oil level, over temp, low coolant, etc., engine and compressor.

Some have to be manually reset once a fault occurs.

There may be instructions somewhere on the machine.

Hank welcome to YT. Can you give the brand and
model of the compressor? If you do not have a manual
for your machine often they can be found on then
internet. Given the machine information we could help
you look. Beware of any sites that ask you to sign in to
download the manuals for free. There are a few that
dump viruses on your PC.
