Oil Capacities

In the Ford 861 tractor manual, under capacities, differential oil quarts for some models are the #8. But for the 800 series, it shows a (3). Why the ( )? Is that the number of quarts in the ( )?
--- which is only listed as 3? Is it only 3 for such a big tractor?

What manual are you looking at? Got your OEM 600 & 800 OPERATOR'S MANUAL out? Page 60 & 61 list the specs. An 860 and an 861 are the same engine, 172 CID OHV Red
Tiger, diesel used the 192 CID. Oil Capacity for all FORD's is 5 QTS in the crankcase including the Filter. Don't know where you get 3 and 8 from. Oil grades have
nothing to do with capacity --- a QUART IS A QUART no matter if it is oil or beer. FORD spec'd oil grades to use as SAE-10 or SAE-20 in 32* F and below temps; and SAE-
20 or 30 in temps above 32*F. You don't have to use a straight SAE grade today. Nowadays you can use whatever you want. The detergent grades used today are better and
will not harm your old FORD engines. Many use standard 5/10W-20, 30, or 40, or Shell Rotella, and others.

Tim: That's a lot of work posting that, well done. Your comment that 'a quart is a quart' ..... well, that's sorta correct. It depends on where you live I guess. Even your manual clears that up on page 60. One of the great things about the metric system is that a litre is a litre, nobody can put an * beside that claim .... ha!

Tims right a QT is a QT if you lived in England or Canada then you would have an imperial Volume. Since Tim is in MI or the US he would not be concerned with the imperial volumes just as I'm not. And since both have sold out a foolish metric program to accommodate some other power, it is no longer in use much. SO a Qt is still a QT. if both are imperial they are still just the same for oil or beer.

(quoted from post at 06:13:27 02/16/23) You mention differential oil. Is this what you mean, or engine oil?

The original post says "differential" so I don't know how anyone got "engine oil" out of that.

Luckily this page shows the capacities of the differential:

It clearly shows the capacity of the 800 series differential at 11-1/2 quarts (9.2 Imperial quarts).

The OP would have to post a picture of the page they are referring to.

Yes, the differential is what I am asking about. 11-1/2 qts. makes more sense than what I see in my book. Rather than the (3) in ( ).
Thank you for the replies.

You state that the 861 diesel engine had 192 cid. All of the info I have indicates that the diesel was 172 cid, same as the gas. ????

Here are photos from the Ford manual that I followed looking for differential oil capacities. the # 3 in ( ) through me off.
