5105 John Deere tach gone crazy

The tach on my tractor won't register correctly anymore, replaced sensor in vain, all grounds check good and I cleaned every plug in with contact cleaner. A replacement instrument cluster is $600 or more. I haven't found anyone who repairs the cluster for a 5105. I was thinking of trying a Dakota digital interface and try to bypass the cluster wiring and just connect to the tach meter alone. Is this possible? another option would be to try to fid a stand alone weather proof tach and use the alternator signal or the original pickup if possible. Any thoughts?

Did you try Ag Express? Probably would put your tractor out of commission while they are working on it because you ship it to them for repair. I know it is the whole idea of not having a part of your tractor not working but who needs as tach, did a lot of work with a tractor without a tach.

Sounds familiar. I had to replace the instrument cluster in my 5210 years ago and the dealer had to calibrate it once we installed it.
Maybe check out this company for a rebuild:

If you want to go with the stand alone tach, I have used several of these on various pieces of equipment.
The first one shown does not come with a mounting bracket for the sensor.
They require the tiny magnet be JB welded to the rotating object and the sensor aimed at and positioned about 1/8 inch away.

Update: google Runleader tachometer, looks like the same for less $$.

I would go back and check the plugs again. Look at the spring contacts in the recptical. A lot of times a few of the contacts will be lower. Using a pic carefully bend it back to the same height as the others.

Can you trace the voltage signal (AC) generated by the sensor to the head? Should (I believe) increase AC voltage as you rev the engine. Mark.
