storage problem

restored (complete tear down)444 Massey-Harris about 4 yrs ago. kept in climate control building,
Will not start, almost all valves are stuck. Lots of rust on valve stems and inside of motor.
It has been started only to use in shows and parades. What do you do to prevent this problem?

When storing boats for the off-season it helps to spray fogging oil into the intake at shut down to coat the cylinders and valves with oil.

What kind of climate is that. Hope Jay Leno dont have that problem. Guess u need to start it more often then.

Since the engine is not stuck, you can probably work the valves loose with some penetrating oil on the stems and prying them shut.

But before starting it, crack the oil drain plug and see what you get. If straight water it's probably condensation, if antifreeze there is an internal coolant leak.

That much condensation is unusual being in a climate controlled building, are you in a high humidity area? And do use the fogging oil as mentioned. Might also want to check the gear cases for water before starting it. Once it's started and the water is emulsified in the oil it is near impossible to get it all out.

If you are starting it frequently you could be defeating your climate control. Water is a product of combustion, so if you start it but don't run it enough to get it up to operating temp and hold it there for twenty minutes to drive the moisture off you are defeating your climate control.

That much rust is not normal at all.

Unless the climate in your climate controlled area is "saltwater rain forest" that's not the problem. Tractors and cars sit outside untouched for decades yet look like new inside if rain is kept out of the intake and exhaust, and the engine has good oil in it.

What you're probably going to find is that something was done to cause the rust.

Drop the oil. Make sure you didn't accidentally grab the jug of calcium chloride solution instead of the 10W40.

I have several tractors in un heated buildings that I start ever so often. I would like to know how much Marvel Mystery Oil to add to the gas to have a positive benefit?? Presently I try not to keep much gas in the tanks. I was a a sale about 30 years ago and ended up with a 5 gallon bucket of Marvel Mystery Oil about 1/3 full and would like to use it up. Nice bucket but getting tired of storing it and shoving it around. Cleddy

The best thing to do is remove spark plugs and squirt about a shot glass of oil into each cyl. Put plugs in and spin it over a few times and good. Even mist some oil into the intake on shut down for the intake valves and guides.

Since it was a complete tear down and now just shows and parades, the valve train didn't get a good coverage of oil when only ran for short periods at idle or just off of. And used a better oil that cleans engine too good to leave a nice coverage of rust protectant, that a straight weight heavy oil would. At least my thoughts.

My brother left me a 85 ford with a 6.9. it sat in in a shed with a tin roof for over 10 years. I drained the oil, it had a lot of water. I thought maybe a the head gasket leaked. I put in fresh oil. After running the motor, no more water. I guess it was water condensation. Stan

Think ya need to investigate what tolerance of climate control the building is seeing. Saying climate control is a broad statement. Something is happening to draw moisture into the engine. Also.......suggest leaving a piece of freshly ground steel with the tractor to be used as an indicator. If it is getting rusty.....ya need a better climate.

Running it puts water in the engine. Shutting it off before it is up to temp leaves the water there. Running it at operating temp for awhile removes the water. Have you never seen the water that comes out of the tailpipe of a car when taking off after a short warm up?
