Farmall 706 diesel w/282 - need thermostat

When replacing the head gasket on my Farmall 706 with the glow plug 282 cid engine I found that there was no thermostat installed. I am trying to figure out where the thermostat really goes. There is a machined surface where a regular thermostat (like picture #2) would commonly go next to the gasket in that upper casting. That would be easy enough, but I think the water pump bypass would bypass to the radiator rather than the engine. I have a gut feeling that the thermostat either goes down in the head or up into that casting. I did find an old crusty rubber gasket that I dug out of that top casting. I also would think the water pump bypass would only circulate coolant within the engine, so that would also help determine where the thermostat goes. Maybe the 706 still takes one of those large old fashioned thermostats? I also see some on the internet with some kind of brass looking adaptors that would make a common thermostat work. I am sure some of you old Farmall/IH guy know. Thanks.

I do know the part number. 313942R92. I did find an A & I thermostat with that part number in inventory at a John Deere Store. The brass like adapter was too big in diameter and no way would fit anyplace. Maybe it was mis-packaged. Wouldn't be the first time that it occurred. That is sort of what has confused me as to where a thermostat goes when it would just be so simple to put the $8.00 auto parts store one where the gasket goes. But I remember I did dig a rubber gasket out of that casting.

Have not had one of those apart for a good many years. Look at the bottom of the upper water outlet, does it have a relief notch machined in it that the thermostat outer diameter will set in? If so, which I am pretty sure it does, that is where it goes.

''I also see some on the internet with some kind of brass looking adaptors that would make a common thermostat work.''

That's basically what's available to replace the original t-stat.

Somewhere in the back of my cobweb encrusted mind, I seem to remember some engines that had had a rubber gasket that fit around the flange of the thermostat also, so that it sealed both top and bottom. Just don't remember which ones.

messicks shows the base gasket as # 278280R2, the rubber spacer/ seal # 262882R1 Devons Tractor parts shows them for $5.00, and I see the thermostat number was already given to you.https://www.devonstractorparts.com/product/seal+part+ih262882r1/1474

heres the pictures for part number 313942R92, theres the rubber gasket you must be talking about , they have it at parts depot along with old cross refrence part numbers
