I needed haircut BAD.Below my ears and curling up under my hat. Looked and felt awful. There is a local beutitian school here. I found out they do haircuts for the public for experience and practice for the students. Cost 5 bucks. The girl who did me today had just started classes. The class is a year long. Then you have to be certifyed. Pretty cool. Giveing these young people experience on a worthwhile career.I will go back next time.

Good deal for you and also a generous act giving the students a live model to work on. Only difference between a bad haircut and a good is two weeks.
My brother became a barber 52 years ago. While he was at barber school, it was 50 cents for a student haircut. The local Salvation Army would send men from their shelter in for a haircut and a shave with a coupon. To become a qualified barber my brother had to be able to give straight razor shaves. Once he became a barber it was only about 10 years before no one ever asked for a shave. He is now 76, and still cuts hair 4 days a week in his shop. Not very many old style barber shops left nowadays, mostly hair salons, with women snipping the hair

Community colleges here used to train folks for haircuts and as dental hygienists. Great price. Took four visits at 1 to 2 hours each to get your teeth cleaned. Too much time off the job for me, even though I knew the director of the program.

My barber had a sign in his shop that read. If you get a bad haircut here not worry it will grow back. He was the best in town and you had to get there early or spend the day.

My barber is right at 80, I am 51, $18 for a cut and good conversation. Had to go to a beauty to get haircut when I was a teenager as the local barber left. Didn't feel right having a gal cut my hair but gave it a couple years and all that changed when they started rubbing up against you. LOL

Ain't it nice! My barber babe always gives a good head and scalp rub when finished. I make her giggle when I start purring. (She better giggle, I tip her five). TDF

Our home town barber quit a couple years ago. Sure miss his haircuts. We joke that we quit together. He quit cutting hair and I quit growing hair.

As a kid, I remember a big sign in the barber shop, We never cut off anything that wont grow back. That was back in the day when they used shaving soap and a straight razor to trim the back of your neck. Can still smell the Four Roses hair tonic, good memories.

I solved the problem, I quit shaving and getting my hair cut. Figured I'd grow it while I still could, it may be gone soon enough. Besides I can play Santa without the props except a pillow.

I was in high school in the seventies when all the guys wore long hair. Local barber had a sign that read Stop Hair Pollution, Get A Haircut. Farmed with Allis Chalmers.

Have heard stories of beautician school students doing hair for free. That's where I thought your story was going, when I first started reading.

Free going up to 5 dollars? I guess we really do have an inflation problem. Just saying.

My wife and I use the local Hair school (Model college) all the time. And my wife is particular how it comes out. We both have an understanding that it will grow out even if wrong, but it has never been wrong. Jim

(quoted from post at 07:50:49 01/12/23) I haven't had a haircut which cost more than free in nearly 40 years. I cut my own.

I got so desperate for a haircut in 2020 that I tried that. It looked like I had given myself a haircut.

Probably after 40 years you're getting pretty good at it. Of course if you just shave your head bald, that's cheating.
