JD 8430 or JD 8630

I'd give the edge to the 8430. The thing to remember in 2023 is that most of either if run for many hours are on a replacement engine (50 series). The rest of the tractor did alright with recommended maintenance being done. For all the yapping I hear about them versus the other brands with contemporary models which were no strangers to the repair shops themselves.

If man made it it is going to break . And when BIG tonka toys break you have to dig deep into the piggy bank to fix . everything has weak points . I have seen where they have engine problems , i have seen guys talk about ft end problems along with a host of other issues . They are now getting long in the tooth been run hard and put away wet .

The 8430 does not have enough power to tear anything up. The only thing i have had to fix on my 84 is a few minor leaks, my neighbors 8630 was always broke.

Right out of high school I worked for the local bto. He had one of each. Never had any problems with either one. One time a disgruntled neighbor sabotaged the 86 by filling the fuel tank with dirt and grass. We didn't know it until we started and ran it maybe 10 minutes until it quit. What a problem to get that fuel system cleaned up.

(quoted from post at 11:13:14 01/10/23) Which 1 is more dependable?

The 619 in the 8630 was not as well supported . If somebody horsed them over and through ditches . Or used a grader blade . They sometimes cracked the block .
As previously stated . These tractors are 45+ years old and have been too often driven by morons .

I agree with GreenEnvy,, only difference is the 84's don't have enough power..they both will break a crankshaft if the front end oscillates hard against the axle stops.

i laugh at all who slice a brand. every brand built problematic machines. plus if you use it ,something will break. its man made

While some aspects of either tractor would have to do with the design and construction, the reliability is almost totally dependent on its use and maintenance.

Thats the one advantage the 84s had. Problem for both tractors was their small block engines for the hp in a heavy 4x4 frame. We had an 8440 and blew the head gasket. We also had a 4640 at the same time. The 8440 didnt out pull the 4640 by much.
