machine shed light update

a while back i had posted about what i thought was an odd glass dome set up for the lights in the machine shed as i could not turn them.

i had more time yesterday to tinker with it and it turned out they are just screwed on but took a strap wrench to encourage it to break free.

what was odd is that there is a base that mounts to the building and then the base the bulb socket is in screws into that and then the glass dome/jar screws on to that. so a pretty deluxe heavy duty unit.

put in an LED so hopefully it will last a while. the lights in there get used rarely.

no cages over these but i have seen them with the cage protector. These are in the ceiling so shouldn't have an issue with getting bumped up there.

I have some similar to that that came out of a hangar the NYNJPA tore down. Very heavy duty and fully explosion proof among other things. I'm planning on installing them in my machine shed someday. That hangar, by the way, was erected near the water at La Guardia Airport for the old PanAm flying boats.

We had those in the damp areas of the dam and powerhouse, used Vaseline on the threads and lip of the glass to keep them from binding.

I've got a couple of those....mostly for decoration. I apply a little petroleum
jelly (Vaseline) to the jar and bulb threads. Seems to help.
Also got about 30 soffit lights that (I'm slowly replacing with LED's.
Some of the old bulbs are pretty corroded in. Bit of a challenge to remove them
as there is not room to get my fingers around the bulb. I got a light removal
stick that works pretty well, but I have to use the suction cup thing to get them out.
As I say, the corroded ones can be a problem, especially the 25 ft high ones.
Those will definitely get the Vaseline treatment!!
