Got the JD L engine apart

Engine was in pretty good shape for being 84 years old.
No wear on cylinders or pistons.
Valves and seats look great.
Rods looked great but mains were a bit sloppy.
Gonna clean everything up and see what we will do about main bearings.
Cool wet day, so the old heater felt good.

Richard. Great job. The pistons are larger than what I had imagined theyd be. Is that the Hercules engine? Wingnut
 
When I did one of my little AC engines some years ago, I didn't want to mess around with shims. And the part of the engine that needed the most work was the bottom end. So I took everything to the machine shop and had them do whatever they needed to do to get everything to take fitted bearings. I put the same pistons and sleeves back in with new rings and it ran great all the time I had it.

We need to get another old tractor running. Getting our old Farmall Regular running years ago, was a tremendously fun project! That ol' girl is what made a YT'er outta me. GRIN

Richard, you have no idea how jealous I am !! I have wanted one of those units since I was a kid (not so much anymore - the kid part). Best of luck with the rebuild !
 
The bores look glazed, but we will hone them of course.
The valve stems show no wear and did not wiggle a bit in the guides.
 
I wish I had one myself.
This belongs to my 80 year old friend.
My 41 JD H will have to do for me.LOL
 
It is fun.
I told my friend that if he got tired of it in another 80 years, I would buy it from him.
 
I can pour and fit babbitt bearings myself.
Did some Model T's years ago.
It is a project that takes some time and patience.
