3 Point Problem

Keeping in mind that 3 point hitch is still kind of a novelty to me but I'm pretty sure this JD 2140 is not working the way it is supposed to. The home built 3 point hitch I made for the Cockshutt 40 worked better. This one is just hard to control. Won't stay down and it raises and lowers without me touching the lever. Hoping there is some adjustment. Short video of whats going on.

I replied to your video on YouTube. You can also email me here too. I will gladly walking you through checking the three point out. We can try through email or I will gladly send you my phone number in an email. I will not post it here anymore. LOL

I really think you have an internal leak. The dead give away is the lift arms going up and down on there own. I also bet that as soon as you shut the tractor off the arms drop pretty fast. Like is posted on YouTube look in through the filler cap while it is running and the lift is trying to lift up. There should not be much oil dripping down from the lift housing. If the packings or orings are bad like I am thinking you will see oil spraying all over the place.

The oring and backup ring that usually leak are #18 and 19 in the picture. They go on plug #17 and all of that is held in with snap ring #20.

My guess is rockshaft piston seal part #AL33017 has failed causing rockshaft to lower then raise continuously while engine is operating. This condition has been referred to as "hiccupping"

I agree with EDF that the small o-rings have a long history of wearing out. I suggest to remove rockshaft housing & replace all o-rings under the housing in conjunction with replacing RS piston seals. All o-rings/backup washers to correct your tractors 3 pt problem should be in a kit.

3 PT control lever has friction washers that need to have more spring tension or are worn out that were designed to keep 3 pt control lever stay where operator places lever. Which according to 2140 parts schematic could had adjustable or spring tension.

Rate of drop screw only controls how fast 3 pt lowers but has zero to do with 3pt raising speed. R-O-D screw can be turned fully clockwise to stop 3 pt from lowering if piston seal is holding pressue.

Thanks very much for the detailed advice here and on the video. I had hoped it might be simply a matter of adjustment but looks like disassembly is in the future. Only thing I remember seeing in the oil filler hole back in the summer was oil vapour rising out of it which I thought a little strange.
I doubt I'll take this job on here in winter. Hope to get by with it til spring. The tractor handles the blower fine in the max down position if I can get the 3 point control lever to lock in the forward position.
Its a little odd those o rings would be worn out because as far as I know the previous owner never used the hitch. I've had it 4 years now and only run the snow blower on it.

If you address the 3 pt lever friction control shown in ""my last photo"" that will solve the 3 pt control lever not staying where you last positioned the lever. Hyd oil temperature & years of service cause the rockshaft control valve o-rings to fail.

Yes, if I can find a way to tighten up that friction disk it will hopefully hold the lever in the down position. Its bad enough having to work looking backwards but also holding that lever down with my right hand just adds to the difficulty.

(quoted from post at 11:23:38 12/31/22) Maybe you can hold it down with a bungee cord until the weather gets better.

As I previously stated simplest thing is utilize the factory installed factory friction device to hold 3pt control lever in the last position that operator put the lever.

Type with pin & cotter key will require an extra washer added so as to put more tension on friction washers. BTDT several times over the many yrs associated with JD utility tractors

Yes, the first thing I will address is that friction disk/washer on the lever. If I can figure out how to tighten that it will at least give short term relief. How far I go with it will depend how cold it is. Bungee cord would only mean I'd then have to hold the lever in the up position to keep the blower off the ground.
