Water softener media and tanks.

Is there any recycle value for these old media tanks? The system I replaced had two of them. They are about 100 Lbs. each and if not I will set them up as targets and get some satisfaction out of blasting them. That system was a pain in my side for the last year or so. Wish I had replaced them sooner, the new AO Smith unit is so much nicer. At least it was somewhat warm in the crawl space and getting them out did work up a sweat.

Other question, is the media toxic if I do blow them apart?

I replace the media in my water softeners periodically.

Usually dump old media on crushed rock road where it vanishes after first decent rain.

My opinion is that the resin and the tanks have zero value if recycled. In our area, only #1 and #2 plastics are recycled and that we cannot not get any money from from a recycling company. I had the same problem and ended up chopping up the mess and putting it in the dumpster. No one complained but, to be honest, I felt guilty. Too bad that two hundred pounds of plastic mess could have possibly been recycled instead of going into the landfill.

A bit diferent question, question. Is it possible to get salt taste in the water at sink from the soffner salt> I have heard that complaint but I never noticed it.

It is certainly possible, if the system were to be improperly set up when installed or if water flow through the unit was restricted. They regenerate by having salt brine forced through the resin tank, then the salt brine is rinsed out by the flow of a lot of gallons of water through the tank.

(quoted from post at 19:25:02 12/28/22) We don't soften our drinking water, we run it through a charcoal filter.

It would be nice to have water that need just a little impurity filtered out instead of having hard water.

The only time I get a salty taste is when someone uses water while the softener is regenerating. If they use hot water, it can persist for a while as they water heater is contaminated.

Thanks for the responses about water softeners. We do use a under sink filter for drinking water. This system was around thirty years old. The timer was the old fin type and would not hold the settings. It would regenerate at odd times and was wasting a lot of salt. I spent way too much time trying to make it work properly. If this new system lasts half as long it will probably outlive me.
I did read up on the media and used tanks. We will have some fun shooting holes in it before I take it to the dump.

It was my lady friend that was complaining about the salt tast. I have no idea
hold the softfner actually is but I think she said the house is about 24 years
old so I am guessing new when her and late husband bought the house, a modular
they bought and had set and no body would tell them that area flooded. She had
the house raised several years back because it flooded. She has been out of
the home for several months now due to ilness with it unpluged. If she can get
to where she can come back home what deeds to be done to restart i?
