Unique bolt on Hydrostatic transmission

I am rebuilding a John Deere 314 Garden Tractor Hydro static transmission. The transmission is a Sundstrand Series 15.
It has hex head bolts everywhere except 2 locations.
Those two bolts have a head that looks like a Torx head. Torx head are a 6 point head where these bolts are 12 point.
Does anyone know what this is called and where I can get a socket to fit over the head?
Note-all of the Torx screws I have have a recess that the Torx sits down into. This is a Torx like head that requires a socket to fit over it.

It's a 12 point bolt head. A 12 point socket should fit it, although I don't know if your particular bolts are English or metric. If you don't have a full set of 12 point sockets, see which of your combination wrenches fit (box end), then buy that size 12 point socket.

(quoted from post at 19:29:00 12/24/22) are they what we used to call a ferry head bolt if so use a 12 pt socket on them

X2!

They not metric, just a standard ''American'' bolt and a standard 12-point socket fits them, 3/8'', IIRC.

12-point flange head capscrew, aka Ferry bolt, use a common 12-point socket of the appropriate size. Often used holding the clamps on driveshaft u joints.

I believe the spline head fasteners are also known as Bristol head. These have 6 splines that have corners that square compared to Torx splines.

I special ordered torx sockets years ago. I don't remember where I got mine.

I would search Craigslist and look for JD mowers with blown engines or missing mower deck.

I found a JD, don't remember the model, for $200. It has good engine 17 hp kawasaki and good HST transmission. No mower deck.
I have a JD270 garden tractor, about 30 years old.
I love the tiller. I hate to take it off and put the 4 ft mower deck on it. I'M TOO OLD. I put the 4 ft deck on my $200 special.
I would look for another $200 special if I had HST issues.

Both my JDs have an oil filter and away to change the HST fluid.

These are some oddball sockets I have. The on

e on the right I bought for hydro transmission on an old Farm king I think it was. The next one was for VW axle cv joints.

The last two I think were for a Luv truck head and intake bolts

O.P. said he needs 12 point not six point.
There is no 12 point torx.

A standard 12 point socket, for hex head, in inch or metric.

Unless it is really oddball like 12 spline.

Yep, the question has been answered by a couple of us that have actually worked on them, a common US 12-point socket fits and works just fine, yet the exotic suggestions continue.

A classic case of ''KISS''.

Sometimes it IS the simple things that work/do the job, NOTHING exotic needed!

But then, of course, a guy can never have too many tools, might just as well rush out and buy an external torx set and a Bristol set, LOL and whatever else exotic can be found!

Double hex or simply 12pt have 120* corners on the 12 points.
XZN or triple square, aka spline has 90* corners on the 12pts.

I have sets of both, internal and external and do not consider them compatible with each other. Dealing with extracting stripped bolts or messing up sockets is not very fun when trying to use the wrong type.
