Ford 4400 - Missing PTO shaft / replacement

I was given a 1970 ford 4400 gas with the 6-4 high low transmission. The model number confirmed it should have independent PTO, but when I removed the PTO shaft cover, I learned the shaft was gone.

How can I diagnose if this is fixable?

Based on some googling I have learned there are some tricks of replacing a shaft that had pulled out accidentally, without having to split the tractor. I am concerned if more damage was done where the PTO shaft connects internally that would prevent it from working and would like to know that before I invest in the new PTO shaft, seals, etc.

Any tips or tricks would be appreciated.

A thrust washer can fall down and block the opening to install the shaft. You can see this when shining a light in there. A large glob of stiff grease on the end of something like a broomstick can be packed upon the washer to move it back up to reinstall the shaft. Takes patience and and a little time to get it right but,it can be done. When reinstalling the shaft be easy and make sure all the splines align when going back into the clutch pack. A parts break down will show you everything needed to complete the job. Most of the time no damage will occur internally when the shaft has been jerked out. The keeper rings for the bearing on the shaft will be damaged letting the shaft pull out of the tractor. This is usually caused by the implement not having enough travel on its drive shaft. I have replaced several over the years using the method described. Good Luck.

(quoted from post at 06:45:11 12/16/22) If the shaft has been removed, what is keeping the oil in the rear end?

He told us that he removed the cover. I take that to be the one that comes with all tractors when new and is rarely used after that.

Was it a screw on cover or a bolt on flat plate
If screw on cover it shouldn t be a issue installing a replacement shaft with the correct bearing and seal
If it was a bolt on plate like my 4500 has I would question the model code a pull the cover off the left side at the back of the left foot board to see if the internal parts are there

Does it have a pto control lever

Thanks for the reply. It did have the screw on cover. I was
concerned maybe the parts werent matching the model no
under the hood, but I have the original manuals and
paperwork and it all matches. It also has the PTO lever on
the left side. Just concerned there was more wrong
internally, because I dont understand why they wouldnt
have fixed it when it broke. Then again this came from a
place where things were definitely rigged with bailing wire.
Its possible they didnt have the money to fix it and instead
just removed the shaft and put the cover back on

Great question and was my big concern when I just saw a hole there. Concerned about the internal damage there. Doesnt seemed to have problems in the rear end but I have only moved it a couple times and not very far.

This is really helpful. Thank you for sharing this tip. Exactly what I was looking for. Will get it inside and give it a go!

Does the tractor have 3 point hitch?
If so, where is the hydraulic pump?
On the Left rear corner of the engine or down low on the Right side of the rear center housing?
