crab steering

I have seen tractor for sale that says they have
crab steering but they don't. I think a lot of
people don't know the difference between articulate
steering, 4 wheel steering, and crab steering. In
articulate steering the tractor bends in the
middle. Four way steering the front wheels turn one
way and the back wheels turn the opposite
direction. In crab steering the front wheels turn
one way and back wheels turn the same way.

Every now and then at work we would set the Lull on crab steering and wait for someone who wasnt familiar with it to try and maneuver the machine. It was pretty comical.

Im trying to wrap my head about your four way steering. If the front rims are turning going forward and the rear rims are turning going in reverse ( going opposite ) the equipment would bow up. Hows that gonna win the war? Wingnut

Not talking about the rotation of wheels but the steering. Four wheel steering ( front wheel turn left, back wheel turn right) CRAB steering ( front wheel turn left, back wheel turn left) and vise versa for right turn

picture worth a thousand words.

in the military we had some Baker 4x4 forklifts what had crab steerng possible and I think also had front teering or rear steering. Quite a machine.

4100,4156,and 4166 did not have crab steering they might have gotten into the position but were not made to steer that way. They had 2 wheel steer and 4 wheel steer. And if linkage broke or bent they then would go into steer as it pleased, which would sometimes become a crab steer position which it was not intended to do.

When we bought our first Tree Farmer dad looked at the Pettibone skidder which had crab steering. They could drive Stright down the road sidewise. We also looked at Ford's Blue Ox. It came down to the Timberjack or the Tree Farmer. The Tree Farmer dealer offered a test drive, although he said he had never had to take one used onsite back to his place. That C4 stayed at the job site, one FMD went home with the dealer and the other came home to the farm. I spent a lot of hours on that FMD, it was kind of spooky driving a tractor that had killed someone.

Austin-Western road graders featured crab steering. I believe the articulated frame of John Deere graders provides crab steering, as the frame articulates independently of the steerable front wheels.

I operated a Case 1200 back in the seventies. As I recall, the crab steering was useful when pulling one-ways.
