How to clean up the mess left behind by fiberoptic

A huge ditchwitch

Was used to bury the orange conduit which spectrum with use for fiber optics cable. My pictures don't show the real mess.
Sticks and leaves hide the craters they left me.

I used my old 1950 Farmall and a slab.of concrete

How about a poor(read cheap) man's harrow. Cut a tree and drag it with the butt off the ground so the limbs smooth it out

Years ago they come through and put in city water lines.
They left the ditch lower than my driveway culvert so the water sat there after a rain.
One phone call to the company and the job supervisor was here the next day looking at it.
The day after that a worker was here with a rubber tire backhoe fixing it.

It takes time for a backfilled trench, or even a plowed in conduit or cable to get back right again.

You can go out there and cosmetically make it look good immediately if you want to. But, ... if you do that, it'll likely need some attention down the road. The dirt will settle in the trench or plowed channel over time, leaving low spots again.

Best thing to do is, just leave any extra dirt that may exist on top of the trench. Add dirt to any low spots, with perhaps a little extra on top of that. Then, just add dirt to any low spots up to level after that.

One things for sure, if you scrape off the extra dirt right away, you'll be back later adding dirt to the low spots.

It usually takes a few rains, before the dirt quits settling.

George: Our township makes a mess every year for me when they plow snow. They get too far off the road (1-2 feet) and I have to fix it with my 6' rear blade on my MF 135. This year I put 6' orange reflective fiberglass round stakes at 1 foot off the road, hope it keeps them out of my grass. I mow 1/2 mile on both sides of the road.

I would think you would be grateful enough to get ''fiber'' you could call that little inconvenience something other than ''a mess''!

On the other hand, several years ago when we got FTTP they horizontal bored it leaving no ''mess'' whatever!

I dont know what the laws are there but here the county owns so many feet from the center of the road as their right of way. This means they can do what they want with it and any obstructions such as one of the previous posters putting up reflectors 1 ft from the road means he is infringing on said right of way more than likely.
Looking at your pics perhaps its your private dr but if it isnt then you are upset over property you dont even own.

If they complain, they can fix the grass they destroy. Several people are putting stakes in their yard because we are tired of them ripping 1-2 feet of our grass out and not fixing it, they won't answer their phone. The township put steel fence post in front of my house (1 foot off the road) last year and broke them off with their plow, I had to find and dig them out in the spring so I didn't hit them with the mower deck, they just left them in the ground.

In regards to grading on a county road ditch in Indiana , the county does not own the county roads. The land owner owns the land to the center of a county road. Phone companies, fiber optic companies, water utilities, county highway departments have a right of way that they can come on to a county road or road ditch and perform whatever they determine needs to be done such as plow snow, drainage clean out, install a fiber optic line or rural water line. I can't speak for Geo , he maybe on his own land on a county right of way or in a county road ditch. I suspect some states have different rules on this.

Really George This is getting pretty petty now. First they will settle in as already stated and it will take some time like till next spring and now you will next be complaining about the low spots from lack of dirt. Besides on the county right of way it really doesn't matter it's not in your yard up by the house. We own to the center of the road here in MI. The county along with public utilities can use it as they see fit for needed services like that. They leave it as they see fit when done and I don't worry about it. IF I lost sleep over all the things you do I would never get any sleep. Maybe that is why you complain about such petty things no sleep.

I didn't think I was complaining. Sorry some of you got your knickers in a twist.
I posted this to show how easy it is to level a deep ruts with a slab of old sidewalk.
The ground was perfect to work.
Been raining, ground was soft..

I'm elated I'm going to get high speed internet in the country .

Once before a crew installed fiber on my right of way using a regular ditch
witch and it was easy to clean up their mess.

They used a huge ditch witch was a bigger mess and I got the job
done with an old Farmall.

I would have never posted this if I knew some here were to attack me like you did.
I hope you feel like you are a better person for
Putting me down.

What happened to being kind and courteous on Talk?

John
This isn't the first time I've cleaned up after water lines or cable was installed on my right of way.

I tried using the front bucket on my terramite, but the slab worked much better at leveling.

In the past people on Talk have asked how to fill in ruts?
The old piece of sidewalk is the way to go.
The Farmall got a workout.
A few times I spun the tires.
I had to pull the slab in the other direction. It was pushing too much dirt.

Very little actual digging was done to connect me to fiber-optic. The used one of those machines that burrows under the ground. Fascinating to watch.

They use ditch witches, a boring machine and in one place to get over a stream, the
fiber was hung under the power lines.

It was easier to stop using a ditch witch on my right of way,
dig a big hole and bore under 2 roads. When they use a boring
machine, it requires digging 2 big holes. It takes many rains
before the dirt to settles in the hole.

Don't think we are better. Just it sounded like whining from you, about the digging and having to level it up. And all we said was it would make more sense to wait till it settled in so you didn't have to go back and do it again then. Just sounded like a complaining since they messed up your perfect yard and road side. Most of us don't really care about what they do to the roadside we don't all think we need to mow or tend the entire roadway grass nor ditches. If i wanted to make the road side look like a manicured lawn I would need a mower on an arm since some of the ditch is about 7feet deep and to steep to mow.

Fiber Optics contracting has been my main business for many years. I can tell you with a great degree of certainty that very few contracts are written without a clean up clause. Most of the time it says the area must be restored in as good or better condition than it was . I would call the contractor or Spectrum and have them clean it up.

Around here they will be back in the spring and refill gravel in driveways, and fill and reseed the trenches.I have two maine water lines and fiber on my property.

I must be missing something, as usual. What was there before looked better than that mess you made. Dont see how dragging a hunk of cement got all that in the road.

John
My pictures don't show the huge rut made I couldn't drive the tractor over the ruts without the belly mower hanging up.

Yes it looks like a mess. One has to break an egg to make scrambled eggs. I can now drive my Farmall C mower on it.

We will put grass seed and straw in it after I fine tune it.
I'm not holding my breath the ruts would have been taken care of. The guys making the ruts said they would drive the ditch witch over the ruts and level it. That never happened.

The loader on the terramite didn't do much.

The slab worked the best. No way would I do this job by hand. The ruts were deep and quarter mile long. They got close to a few trees and pulled up some 5 inch roots.

They planted fiber optic across the road from us years ago, and we still have the slowest possible connection, so they can shove their f-o as far as I am concerned.

This fall, the local township utilities (town is miles from me but their lines go along the front of my property) hired some company to clear 15 feet either side of their lines. They cut down a number of old trees that had no chance of reaching their lines, and they left me 13 stumps to deal with.

I am not whining: I am ------. The utilities board promised to consider taking care of their stumps, but they have done nothing so far.

Yes, I own to the middle of the road. Yes, there is a subversive clause that lets them do pretty much whatever they want on my property without any recourse.

I forgot to add my Epic Haiku fashion. made the ground seed
bed ready and level enough for it to be lawn mower ready..

What in the heck is Epic Haiku fashion?
Inquiring minds want to know. Never heard of it before

Looks good to me... : )

When they put a new NG line in along my drive I let the sunk'N place be so I will know where the line is. It was wet and hot and being the nice guy I am kept the workers watered. I told them not to worry about the mess I would take care of it. They left me a new roll of yellow gas line and a big bag of grass seed of my choice.

When they put cable in along the front of my house and drive they bored it in I would wager 1200'.
