machine shed light protector

in machine shed at the farm the 2 lights both have a glass jar protector over the regular type bulb. My wife's grandfather had the lights put in sometime back (I would guess in the late 80's).

I need to change a bulb but cannot figure out how the jar comes off. it looks like the glass has a metal base attached to it that connects to the bulb base attached in the rafters.

I cannot turn the base nor see how it may come apart. not wanting to break it I didn't try too hard as i wasn't sure if threaded or if some kind of 1/2 turn bayonet style.

Anyone come across anything like these? Unfortunately i don't have a picture it.

Thanks.

Is this what you have?

The jar should just unscrew. It may be stuck on the rubber gasket or some corrosion on the internal threads in the aluminum holder.

As the other poster said, wear gloves.

Could it be the push-up then turn-quarter-turn type of light? You might push up slightly and see if it goes.

Good idea. It might be stuck enough that some leverage could be necessary. And fatigued enough that it's going to break anyhow. My 'one size fits all' strap wrench is made out of seat belt like material.

explosion proof, the jar unscrews. remember the old bulk dealers had them in the bulk oil sheds? plus lots of other places. plus the oil rigs too. any place that there was a chance for fire.

All good advice, there may also be a small allen head set screw in the outer ring keeping the glass jar from turning, I have them at work.

no.

the jar does not look like a regular jar. it is fully rounded so it's technically not a jar I guess. they would probably call it a glass cover/protector.
