I've just bought a model 40, the only numbers I've got is what is in the cast iron. *M1788T-*M1782T-*M1790T-*M2495T that was found on the engine, transmission 'rear axle also I've got a number off of the steering box it's hard to read but *S125998 is the number I believe. The steering is the main problem on the old tractor but it's hard to figure out what parts I need especially when I dont know what model I have. If anyone could help me out i sure do appreciate it so much. My uncle who just past away was my supervisor when it came to helping me out with with antique tractors, we have restored a model C and B allis chalmers but I'll try to continue what he loved best if god is willing!

on the right side of the motor, near the generator; there is a flat spot cast in the block. There are numbers there that can be used by the Territory Service Manager of your local John Deere Dealership to get you the ser.# for your tractor. The number stamped isn't your tractor number, but can be used to acquire your correct number. The new ser.# tag will have the modern barcode printed on it. Good luck. I know our 40 has this number stamped in the casting.

I'll add to Mark-Ia comments.. If the engine block is original; there are one letter and four numbers on flat area at top of the block under the generator.. Scrape paint.. These engine serial numbers and other information will get you the tractor serial-number.. Give to dealers territory manager, and may any other information off the tractor they my need.. All information goes on a form, you sign. It will take a long time; but you should get a replace plate with your tractors serial-number. All secure, even Deere will come out and put on the new plate...

Thank you! I'll go check it out right away! Also what are the bolts that hold on wheel weights called ? I can't remember to save my life

Weight bolts?? Rear wheel weight bolts? Just a grade-5 carriage bolt, uses 4- 3/4X
varied lengths, long enough to go through cast wheel hub and the weight.. I know of no
special name for these bolts..
