Ford 3000 starter issue

Hi. I could use some wisdom here. I have a Ford 3000. Runs great usually, but the Battery was weak for a year and I often had to jump it, so today I replaced it. It s 25 degrees out and I finally just bought a new battery. I install it, it cranked for 30 secs and finally starts. (Hasn t been started in 7-8 weeks). I shut it down, tried it again, starter spun, but didn t engage flywheel. Just buzzed. So I shut it down real quick. Hit it again after 5 seconds..same thing. Starter is spinning but didn t engage. Waited a minute, then did it again. It started cranking normally but this time, would not stop cranking. EVEN AFTER SHUTTING OFF YHE KEY.. I yanked off negative terminal and got it shut downbut dang. Freaked me out. Starter is newer. Battery is new. If I recall, starter switch is newer. My Only guesstimate is Solenoid. Can anyone validate this issue and offer a solution??? I appreciate any help on this. Thanks.

With your old tired battery the contacts were slowly burning each time you started the tractor. Then with the new battery and cold weather they welded together from the cold weather and the extra load. the reason for the not stopping when you quit on the switch. Now you need to either replace the solenoid or try getting the cap loose and turn the bolts to see if they will work. I usually have to replace the solenoid when that happens. As for the starter not meshing with the ring gear. If you have some heavy grease on the shaft where the drive is, it might not sling out fast enough to engage, or it could be due in part to your contact issue.

Welcome to the forum.
I agree with Caterpiller guy.
You should always mention if your 3000 is
gas or diesel. The starters are very
different.

I have seen that happen when solenoid contacts get burned, pitted, carboned over and can stick together. It
happens more in cold weather and/or when the batteries are low.

thank you caterpillar guy for the detailed explanation. I ll plan to pick up a new solenoid at Rural King. I really appreciate the response.

New Solenoid fixed the issue. Starter bendix is still slow to grab (usually by 3rd try) but thank you to all who helped resolve my issue. I appreciate it.
