Friendly reminder ,check the antifreeze in your baby here right soon ! Dont want anything to happen . Im a senior and I forget to do it , sometimes I over look this simple task .

I bought a cheap tester yesterday. I haven't used it yet. I tried to use my pressure washer and it wouldn't work. I assume it got a little to cold and that an O-ring is pushed out of place and will need some attention to get it to work again. I found that you can check the PH level of your coolant with a multi meter. I'm going to check that also.

Lately I discussed antifreeze with a friendly mechanic. I wondered if the antifreeze in our 2010 Dodge Avenger needed changed mainly for rust protection. Long ago I had a '65 Chevy and the head gasket failed due to not changing antifreeze for rust protection. The mechanic said that's not a concern like it used to be, he wouldn't change it. If you haven't added water to your coolant does antifreeze lose freeze protection due to age?

No, the freeze protection remains, but the rust/corrosion inhibitors do deplete.

Once depleted the block and radiator begin to clog with sediment. The sediment is corrosive and eats away at the expansion plugs and other components.

YEP, you can. If I recall correctly no more then .3 volts on your handy dandy volt meter,

Guido.

Just as important , check the corrosion inhibitor activity .
Can have -40F protection and still have pin holes cavitation g through the sleeves .

Just asked my mechanic about this as my truck is 7 years old. He said to change at 10 years or 100,000 miles. And good reminder - I usually wait til the first really cold night and run around in the dark checking every tractor with a flashlight because the time has changed. Got caught once with a low reading and then really scrambled.
