1986 Ford 555b backhoe does not go forward but does reverse. Working today and everything was fine for several hours hard work. Used back bucket for a few minutes and then backed up with no problem. when placing in forward it would not move in any gear. Reverse moves in all gears with no problem. Could it just be low fluid?

Hello SC welcome to YT! No expert but in my opinion if
it moves fine in reverse then it is probably not the fluid
level, although it is worth checking. As Shaun alludes
to when he says spool that means ..spool valve.. If you
have a shuttle shift which changes direction by one
lever that is likely done by a clutch pack. It is a
possibility that an oring or seal that holds pressure to
apply the forward clutch just decided to spring a leak
at that moment. Hopefully someone will be along with
a more precise direction to proceed. I am going to bet
it involves some troubleshooting by using a pressure
gauge.

Thank you for your replies. I let the backhoe cool down for 24 hours, then topped off the transmission fluid. Ran it through all the gears before placing the F/R lever in reverse and forward. Operates as normal. Not sure if the fluid was low or just overheated, but now keep close eye on the fluid.
