801 John Deere

I have a neighbor who has what I think is an 801 Industrial tractor and loader.
Has not run for a couple years. It is straight, has a loader and three point.
Looks like it would be pretty useful. Does anyone have any information on
these tractors? Is it worth working on if there are no major issues. The
current owner says it was running when parked, we have all heard that, and
he said there was trouble getting it into gears. Any thoughts would be
appreciated. Thanks

A 801 is a Ford. But a 401 is a JD. Neighbor had one 401. Ex. State Tractor. Had been in a lot of Salt. Everything stuck or rusty. But they are a decent tractor. Really strong loader.direction reverser. Power brakes

Thanks could not read any information only the last digits, 401.

Did some research and John Deere did make an 801D tractor
So thought that might be the one. How does one tell the difference?

As I previously stated JD DID NOT manufacture a model 801 or even 801D tractor. Photo below shows results of a search of JDparts.com for a MODEL 801 TRACTOR parts catalog which doesn't EXIST. JD model 801 tractor isn't listed on Tractordata.com either.

I suggest that you post some photos of this mysterious model JD tractor.

Post some pictures of the tractor in question.

Need to see documentation of what you found on a JD 801D tractor. They made an 801 Hitch, no tractor. Below is what a JD Parts gives for results.

Look real close again and see if it's a 301. They were pretty much a 1020 Industrial if memory serves me right. They'd be a 3 cylinder.

I am sure if you searched much you came across results from Tractordata. In the link is a 301. What I call an ..eyebrow.. on the top front of the hood and the, in this case black side screens just ahead of the motor are indicative of the JD style pretty much from the early 60s up through most models of the very early 70s. If the tractor you are looking at does not have these features it is not a Deere.
JD 301

Well you guys are all correct, that is what I appreciate about this forum.
So what are your thoughts on doing a little work to get this old girl going?
Is it worth the time and effort and of course expense?

Gas or diesel? Gas could have carb problems. If diesel and the pump is stuck internally repair cost is much more.

301 were good tractors. If you want a loader tractor, they are an industrial tractor and should have an industrial loader, thus heavier built for loader use. Up to you on the $$ involved if you have to purchase.

I thought the 301A scrap pile was worth bringing back from the land of the dead. Hydraulics was a pain but finally found problem.

Good to hear. Question, did you have to do any work with the transmission? It sounds like it has
a two speed transmission. The current owner says he was having trouble getting into gear. Could
be something minor, or else a big issue. Will have to talk some more with him.

A 301 should have a 4-speed transmission. It will also have a mechanical park-hi-lo-reverse auxiliary if it does not have a hydraulic reverser. If it has the hydraulic reverser (lever under the steering wheel on the left side) the mechanical auxiliary does not have reverse in it.

The full serial number from the tag on the right side of the transmission, above the rear of the running board should give insight as to just what it is.

A 301 probably has the same engine as a 350 crawler, my dad had one for many years, he loved it. If it has a reverser it's a real plus. If you can't get it into gear it may be a warped clutch disc, that happened to our JD 440 skidder.

Thanks for the information, will need to learn a lot on this machine.
Kind of eager to start on this one just need to get it over to my place.

The 301A has 8 speed forward with 4 reverse via reverser. Got chewed out by KB for not going into the front section of clutches. My excuse was that the bell housing was so clean that I thought the shuttle was gone through before it was sabotaged about a decade ago. All seem to work ok when I tried to start it by pulling it.
