International 540 vs New Idea 3626

I currently run a pretty decent international 540 manure spreader with a top beater, but for the past few months Ive been driving by a pretty straight new idea 3626 with a top beater that looks to have been sitting in its spot for a number of years on a concrete pad behind a barn. The tires are flat and the main bottom beater is off and laying in the spreader box. What could be wrong with it that would cause them to remove the beater and leave it sitting. Other than being a project that was never finished. And would a 3626 be an upgrade from my IH 540. Its been an exceptional spreader but parts are getting difficult to come by.

No idea how the two spreaders compare. Likely the beater is out because; 1 it may be broke, 2 bearings may be out or 3 gear box is out. Only way to know is to stop by and ask for a look, probably right a project that never got priority.

I would about bet the shaft from the gearbox to the beater is broken. I bought one for my 3732 two years ago. It as over $400. The real problem was getting the broken piece out of the beater. If that is what's wrong with it, I'd think long and hard before buying it. You might have to cut the beater apart to knock the piece out from the back side.

Neither spreader is made anymore. Neither company make box spreaders anymore.

As far as parts on your 540 what parts can you possibly need? The only real wear items on it are all standard things you can get at Tractor Supply, except the apron chain, but you can get that from third-party sources.

Really the only reason to upgrade to the New Idea is if the 540's frame and box are on the verge of rotting out and the New Idea is in better enough shape to justify the price.

I would not worry much about the top beater. There's a reason they don't sell box spreaders with top beaters anymore. What that is I don't know but they're clearly not necessary.

Most likely there are more 540's in the parts yard which would be the bottom line for me. Upper beater is important for well loaded spreaders carrying pen packed manure.

When did AGCO stop making box spreaders? For a while there you could buy a new one with New Idea, Massey Ferguson or AGCO decals.
They all only said AGCO on the tag, my 3732 tag included. There was no differentiation in the serial numbers. The dealer was
telling me when I bought mine that he had a guy wanting a new New Idea and wouldn't settle for anything else. He ordered it and
when it came, it had Massey decals. He said he steamed them off, put new New Idea decals on and delivered it to him. He said the
guy was happy as a clam and none the wiser.

Other short line companies still make box spreaders too, hydra push and apron.

The market for conventional box spreaders is a lot smaller than it once was. Side slingers and vertical beater spreaders have pretty much replaced them for dry material on larger farms because they spread the manure better and hold up better.

Besides New Holland, only a few smaller shortline manufacturers still make conventional horizontal-beater box spreaders. They're not cheap. I think a 155 New Holland is around $15,000 now, and the H&S is even more.

Other than New Holland, there is H&S in Marshfield, WI., Pequea in Lancaster, PA., Kelly Ryan in Blair, NE, and Meyer's in Dorchester, WI. (There are two
separate Meyer companies in Dorchester, apparently. One makes box spreaders the other doesn't.) Other than a few little Amish places that make ground-drive
New Idea clones, I can't think of any other current-manufacture box spreaders.
