Kawasaki 23 HP 2 CYLINDER ENGINE

I have this engine on a zero turn mower. Ignition Coil Pack. Sometimes the engine runs at full power and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes pulling the wire from the coil pack will stop the engine and other times it doesn't make any difference. QUESTION----Can these coil packs go bad like that--run perfect for awhile then just quit working...

I had 3.5 hp briggs. The spark plug would work for about 5 minutes then the engine stopped. After it cooled off the plug would work again.

Easy to replace plugs.

Can these coil packs go bad? Anything can go bad.
The best way to test it is by substitution.

Have you checked the valve clearance?

I have seen a briggs engine stop working because the heat caused the valve stem to expand and not close all the way..

Post back with your findings.

Anything is possible.

Pulling one plug wire only proves if that cylinder is firing or not.

Next time ease the wire back where you can see the spark. If it is sparking but not making a difference, then assume it is not the coil pack. If no spark, then there is an ignition problem.

Not sure how that is set up, but unless it is a battery ignition, there is a kill wire to each coil. Need to disconnect those wires temporarily to be sure the problem is not in the kill circuit before buying coils.

Coils can go intermittently bad. Sometimes going open when they hear up and will work again when cooled down some. I've also seen when pulling one wire of a plug will run by arcing but miss when it's connected back. The extra gap will build more voltage and fire the plug.

Please clarify which wire you are removing from the coil pack?

The small wire is a "kill" wire. Removing it should not kill the engine.

If you are removing a spark plug wire, and the engine continues to run, it's running on one cylinder.

If you are removing BOTH spark plug wires, and the engine continues to run, call a priest. You don't need a mechanic. You need an exorcist.

This coil would rarely fail and when it did it was a cool damp day in February.
