Wonder how many people died from this
unrefrigerated delivery of milk. There are
now so many Heaith Dept. rules with the
handling of milk it makes your head spin.
I've drank raw milk most of my life and
credit it for my good health and no broken
bones. Great picture.

They probably had ice in the back to keep it cool.

If there was a railroad depot in town, they had an icehouse to supply the box cars.

People were tougher then, they had real immune systems, not what's sold by the pharmaceutical companies that we (especially the children) have come to depend on!

i often mention to folks that i remember horse drawn milk wagons.
cream on top too. becker farm. i grew up 25 miles west of nyc in caldwell, n.j.. late 40s ... and grampa would pick up the manure in the street for the garden.

The ratio of deaths from unpasteurized milk vs the diseases spawned by horse manure in those dank streets would be interesting to compare. Dont get me wrong growing up with dairy, hogs, and, chicken I learned not to the fertilizer or unpasteurized milk. I have read that the invention of the automobile ironically prevented the growing concern of sanitation and health issues caused by fertilizer left behind in the larger cities.

I grew up on unpasteurized milk. That's all we ever had at home. Brought it up from the barn, bottled it and put it in the refrigerator. Never had any ill effects from it.
Wasn't till we went to school that we had "store bought" pasteurized milk.

Drank raw milk from the cow since there was about a half pail left in the line after milking and dad always brought some in with the milker for the house when we milked by hand or with bucket milkers. Got fancy milk when we went to school. Not till then. Drank fresh milk till the cows were sold.
