What engine is this? Chrysler or dodge?

Fixing an American Coleman aircraft tug MB4 (or G40). I'm confused as to this engine, thinking it might have been swapped at one point. These came with chrysler engines, but this has a dodge engine stamp on it?

Can you please help me identify it?

I also am told it needs a new alternator. Can I basically throw anything in there that fits and has the right volts/amps rating?

Don't forget that Dodge was a division of the Chrysler corporation for decades. I'm sure the famous flat head Chrysler corporation engines were probably cast at several foundries & depending on what foundry was doing the work one could find blocks cast with Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth or DeSoto logo on any given day.

Hello D welcome to YT! I have a little more of
explanation I copy and paste to inform new users who
try to post photos what is happening.. Due to this
being a G rated forum you are generally not allowed to
post a picture until after your 5th post. This is to keep
internet bad guys from popping in and dropping a
bunch of ..no no.. photos. If you get a notice of
..improper terms.. this is just the default excuse the
forum host chose to use. To get quicker permission go
to the ..Site Comments.. topic section in the link. Post
there with a topic of ..New poster picture help.. Then
explain your intent, then the mods will remove the
restrictions. Pictures are added through the ..Choose
files.. button in the ..Advanced Posting.. area at the
bottom of a New Post or a reply. Just pasting the
photo as a file in the text area will not work.

Info only M-37 3/4 ton Military Trucks were similar to the civilian Dodge Power Wagon from the late 40's to early/mid 50's. I am not familiar with what you are working with but some later aircraft tugs were/are modified pickup trucks.

This is not to help you with your specific problem but rather it is just a general statement. When I was a kid, I had a 1950 Dodge with a 6 cylinder flat head engine in it. The engine threw a rod right out through the side of the block. I found a Chrysler engine of the same vintage at a junk yard. I pulled the old Dodge engine and installed the Chrysler engine. It was an easy swap and I ran it for a couple of years before I sold the old car. It was virtually the same engine.

need a photo for sure, chrysler and dodge is the same engine. at least tell us if its the flathead 6 cyl would be of help. chrysler had all kinds of fatheads in massey tractors and combines as well as cockshutt combines, and also in the lincoln welders. so yes a photo is of great help. and a picture of the alternator too. the early engines had generators. and if it has the distributor up on top the head then its a continental engine as they were in lots of forklifts and massey tractors also, so pretty hard to give u an answer.

If yours is a flathead read further, otherwise ignore. These came in two different versions. Long and short, Long having a head that measures 25 front to back, the other 23. The long version was used in Chrysler and Desoto cars in the US, and in all vehicles in Canada, /the short one was used in Plymouth and Dodge in the US.
The 23 can be stamped with either ID depending on it's original use. The head can sometimes also have a brand cast on it they can be either 218 or 230 CI displacement depending on the stroke. All parts are the same between the two with the exception of the crankshaft and rods.

If it has a Dodge id and measures 23, just get parts for any make or model with the same stroke.
