Cub pistons seized, stuck

Think of buying a 1950 cub block with Pistons and crank still on it, the seller said the Pistons are seized, he wants $150.
Should I buy it and try to free it , or stay way from it , and look for another block, my cub the right block ear was repaired before I bought it, leaks oil through the welds, and it s still cracked in the inner part of the block .

I would think there would be plenty of cub blocks and engines, without the work of getting pistons and sleeves out of one in that condition. Though I have no idea what the going price is for them.

if the walls are rusty the block will need to be bored that means money money
money stay away from that one there are good blocks out there what will be your
use of the tractor will depend on just how good the engine will need to be

Grandpa recently posted he removed heads and finally got pistons
broken loose.

He has also posted an engine that was so bad, the valves were
rusted.
I would think for $150 there are a lot of good parts to repair
other Cubs with. Good tires should be worth $150.
I'll let Grandpa voice his opinion.

Depends on how bad it is stuck, vs. how far do you
have to go to get another block? Have you seen it
in person? You have to take it all apart anyway, why
cant your current block be fixed?

Rust is going to very likely require the boring and resizing the block and replacement of the pistons with oversize. Not a bad option if the rebuild is intended any way. Any piston can be removed with little damage to the block. Only time and effort is involved. If you want to use your existing components, not likely to be best practices. Jim

Nothing to lose by trying to stop the oil leak on the existing engine.

Clean it up, spray carb cleaner in the leaks, grind it down to looking good without sacrificing strength, then mash JB Weld in the leaks. Grind off the excess, repeat until the leak stops.

The problem I'm seeing here is, it's going
to take a lot of time, patients, and effort
to get the seized engine unstuck. And your
not going to know what you got (good block
or bad) until you do get those seized
pistons out. If and when you get that far,
you might have to have the block bored out
as others have mentioned. And that will
come at an expense. Not even sure how close
you are to a machine shop with that
capability. But it'd be aways away for me
to find a place that could do that.

How this would all turn out is a crap
shoot. You could get really really lucky,
spray some WD, and the pistons tap right
out. But chances are way more better that
they won't come out that easy. About the
same relatively high chances that the block
will need honed or bored.

For me, it'd come down to your other
options. If this was my last option and I
had the time, I'd take a chance and go for
it. But if I had not exhausted my options
in finding another block, I'd probably keep
searching. Another factor is, how fast do
you want this project to move along??
Because messing with this seized block, is
gonna do nothing but slow this project way
down. Almost to a stand still until it is
un-seized. And that takes time. Time that a
lot of people don't have the patience for.

(reply to post at 05:58:11 10/29/22) [/quot jp tractorsalvage has cleaned fluxed bored if needed, includes cam valves and pistons ready to put together for not a whole lot more than that

That motor ain't worth scrap price.
There is a reason the seller ain't
getting it un stuck .... It would be
worth way more if it wasn't stuck. I
would not buy it. Fix your oil leak.
It's no big deal. Cracked , welded, and
oil oozing is common on cubs. There
isn't any pressure behind that weld.
Or call JP tractor.

If you don't like that Cub, sell it.
Very easy to get your money out of it,
as is. Plus you keep the equipment.
Pour a bunch of money and time in
it.... You won't be able to get much
more out of it .... Just saying....
Kevin, 45 cubs and counting.....
