With all the talk about EVs here is something different.

Rams Aiming for Cummins-Level Notoriety With Its Hurricane I6 Gasoline Engine. The entire powerplant weighs just 441 pounds.

Will this engine find its way into more than just trucks?
Hurricane straight six

Nice post neighbor, sounds like it could be ???? a winner, time will tell. Having been somewhat in the trucking business for a time I LIKED CUMMINS. However, the diesel engine used in Ram trucks (which I believe were okay) WERE HEAVY FOR THE TRUCKS CHASSIS AND FRAME in my laymens OPINION.....Its seemed the pickup frame and chassis, brake and front end parts etc., might ??? wear out LONG BEFORE that Cummins diesel engine would......ALL SUBJECT TO USE AND MILES

NICE and since NOT EV or Solar this thread may not go poof lol ALSO I wonder if it being gas will replace much of the Cummins diesel use ?????????????????????? and as you ask be used in OTHER vehicles??? NO IDEA

From the pictures in the article you would never know it is a straight six buried under all that other stuff!

The extra 4 psi of turbo boost sure does a lot for hp and torque.
They must have other twerks in there too.

A gas six that is less than half of the current gas V8 in size, in a one ton dually will be a hard sell.

The motor was not to heavy the truck was too light! The original plan was for it to go into a ford but ford wanted to build it in house.

I've said for years that a good turbo gas engine would be an excellent alternative for both trucks and certain tractors. Most utility tractors could very easily be gas. And a 120hp gas turbo for round baling, cutting and loader work would work well I think. O wouldn't want to do tillage work I don't think, but for what any use a tractor that size for I think it would work well.

But, George...........how will this set with the chest thumping, tires out past the body, jacked up crowd, not being able to "roll coal"??!!

A signal that the transition to EV's won't happen as soon as media leads us to believe. Ram realizes some buyers will stick with the ICE engine especially if they need towing capacity. A mileage advantage over the V-8 Hemi engine if high gas prices stay with us. Also the end maybe in sight for V-8 engines. From what I read you better not miss oil change messages on your message center when they come up on a turbo gas engine.

That's my concern, upping the HP and bragging about weight reduction doesn't sound like a safe combination.

It would probably work for an empty truck occasionally spinning the tires, but load it down every day?

Depends on how they put the engine together. Did they use variable timing with timing belts and cam phazers that rely on engine oil pressure or is it like the old Ford 300 6 with a gear driven cam (not even a timing chain). If it's even a decent design I see 250K miles as average. Given the add on emissions that destroy the efficiency and longevity of diesel engines I am all for gas.

on't get overly concerned, many a 50,000 pound load was moved across the USA with two to 300 CI under 100 hp gas engines in the 30s,40s,50s. We didn't run at 70-80MPH, however.

Maybe Harley-Davidson will develop a diesel model to attract younger buyers away from the used diesel pickup market?

Aluminum block and head.

twin-overhead-cam direct-injected inline-6 Hurricane will have bore and stroke measurements of 84.0 millimeters and 90.0 millimeters. Both ends of the cylinder are aluminum, while the cylinders are spray bored using a plasma transfer wire arc process that adds a thin iron coating to the cylinder walls. Stellantis explained that this is a lightweight design approach in place of the conventional iron sleeve, saving 3 lb in weight.

Up here in the rust belt and cold of Minnesota its tough to like a diesel pickup. They rust out and rot away long before the engine gets old, and starting below zero has its issues too. Then in snow and ice you have all the weight up front, not over the typical drive wheels. Works the drivetrain pretty hard being in 4wd so much of the time.

Agreed. With the emissions cost I am really shocked the compact and sub compact tractor market isn't full of gas engines as alternates to the little diesel engines.

It sounds like a good concept for some, but would never be a reliable work engine. It's got really good HP/TQ numbers but its small displacement, light weight and being boosted with pretty high pressures is not a good recipe for a workhorse engine.

My boy went to a Harley dealer to check out new bikes.
The show room was empty, their repair shop was packed.
He then went to the Honda dealer. He loves Hondas.
I met a harley mechanic. He road a Honda Valkyrie.
I asked him why not a Harley? His answer was reliability.
He said Harley owners need friends with trailers to haul them home.
