Told Dealer to Keep New Chev 5500!

I ordered a new farm truck on July 9th 2021. was told it should be in maybe as early as December of 21.
Received a phone call 2 days before thanksgiving telling me I would have to re-order in a 22 model as 21's
were being cancelled at the end of the year. So I reordered Black Friday of last year. Price went up a
little around $15 - $1600. Not too bad. Got a call Monday... My truck was in! Went to look at it & test
drive it. It was good. Then came the price An $8,000 dollar increase!!! I asked to see my order, & they
never showed it to me. So I told them there was probably less than a 25% chance I would take delivery.
Then they started screaming at me. I told them with the increase, & much higher interest rates the payment
just was not worth it, & I WAS TOLD THE PAYMENT WOULD BE LOCKED IN ON BLACK FRIDAY! By the way the
original salesperson retired one month ago. So He was not around to confirm it! They flat out told me
they knew the salesperson, & He would have never ever said such a thing! I went back today told them
The original price is final price or I walk out. Well... I walked out! I told them if I placed an order
today them the $8000 difference would be unavoidable. But me waiting 15 1/3 months IS NOT MY FAULT.
I will order another one; but next one will be signed dated & stamped no price increase, or no deal.
Heard on 750 a.m. out of Chicago last night that housing prices fell for the 8th week in a row. No
shock to me!

Your thoughts anyone! Did I do them a favor, or me a favor?

It's very common now to have the dealer add a surcharge on top of the list price. My son was having his Dodge serviced at the dealer last month. He was browsing the new trucks and at the bottom of the invoice was a Convenience Charge or some such wording for $10k over the list price. My son asked what it was and the salesman said they just add it to the trucks because they are hard to get. Can you say price gouging.

I ordered my 22 Ford cargo van in Nov of 21. Salesman wrote up order with dealer charges, sales tax, bottom line price and signed it. I put 5000 down and signed it. He said it wouldn't be in for 4 months.
May of 22 he called me and said it's in but the window sticker is 2500 more. Okay, so what? I will have to pay it. I told him I don't think so, I'm looking at my order with the total bottom line price signed by both of us. He said he has no control over that. They don't know what the price is going to be until it arrives. I said not my problem, you shouldn't have signed the final price order. He would talk to the sales manager and see what he could do and call me back. Said he really pleaded on my behalf but I have to pay the 2500 more. I said no I don't, I will be in this afternoon to get my 5000 deposit back. 15 minutes later he called me back and said I can get it for ordered price.

Over a year ago I decided this old retired guy did not need a 3/4ton diesel pickup and a 12000 pound dump trailer. So I decided to downsize.
I ordered a smaller dump trailer and put a deposit on it. I had a contract. When the trailer was ready they tried to raise the price. I filed a complaint with the auto dealer licensing people and they did nothing. But then I filed a complaint with his bonding company. Said I would go after them for what it would cost me to get a trailer from someone else.
Funny thing in about a week a had the trailer at they original price.
I also put a deposit on a new Toyota Tacoma at a John Elway dealer. When it came in I was at grandsons little league game. They sent me a text saying I had to show up immediately or they would sell it to someone else. I let the higher ups know what happened. Im not sure the salesperson had a job when all was said and done.
Bottom line is both new vehicles are very nice. And I was only able to get them because I took a stand.

Best to wait until the screams start about a recession.
Then again, December is coming and Christmas/New years might be a good time to look again.
Money buys food. That truck payment does not buy food. You can't eat it.

In the middle of the shut down When every one were told to stay home I went to a car dealer and the front door was locked so I went in the side door. GM was giving free interest or $6000 off. I thought I'm paying interest on my used truck so if I trade in and get zero interest I can save money. The dealer shot me a price and then what the payments would be. If there is no interest then the total of payments should be the selling price. Well it was $ 3000 higher. I said your trying to rip me off and got up and walked out. Another saleslady called me up and said come back in. She gave me the right deal. Sent it to GM and they said no my credit was 2 points to low. I told the dealer ( well I guess I'm going to have to walk out of here twice in one day.). They said wait a minute. They found me a interest loan so low that the payment was lower than the no interest deal. I ended up getting the truck for $ 11000 off not $6000 off.

Makes me happy I have a old basic truck I can fix and keep on the road. I sure would like a key fob to lock unlock the doors but I missed it by a year... Looks like J.C. Whitney would have a cheap fix/kit for that. : )

New car sales = a customer base. No sales no problem with all the gismo's they have added old sales may be the customer base.

It looks like $200 just to look at it these days I wish I had thought of that 20 years ago... LIFE WOULD HAVE BEEN GOOD!

You did the right thing in my opinion. Dealers here are charging above new price for late model used just because they can get away with it. Supply demand.

My brother was at a dealer and said that with the prices starting to drop, that the lots have vehicles that they paid to much for and that they can not afford to come down on their prices. He was there for 2.5 hours and was so upset with them that he went home instead of heading up the road to another dealer.

A Subaru dealership was putting a $3,000 dollar up charge , over MSPR, on their performance models. I ended up buying a low mileage used one with more options.

I definitely do not trust car dealerships either. We bought a brand new Dodge 1/2 ton in 2018, there was 25% off at the time so we were able to get a really nice truck for a reasonable amount of money at the time. Last year they called and told me they had on record our truck was 3 years old , part of the previous model line and wanted to know if wed be interested in trading up. I said I didnt know what were they offering? They had a new truck with the same options as ours for $103 999 CDN plus HST (15% sales tax). I said ok what will you give us for ours, they said of course theyd have to evaluate it but based on the model and mileage (around 60 000mi) they could potentially give us $30 000. So trade plus tax for a 1/2 ton gas would have stung us just under $90 000 CDN to come up 3 years. I said absolutely not and please dont ask again. To add insult to injury they just so happened to have a truck identical to ours on their lot and coincidentally very close in mileage and they wanted $45 000 for it but told us ours was only worth $30 000. I know its just business and I cant scarcely imagine their overhead and monthly expenses but thats not my problem and we still love our current truck.

I have a 1999 F550 and it does anything I need it to do,for the trouble some of my friends are having with newer trucks don't think I'd trade it even up for a new one.Plus we have a 5% yearly property tax on vehicles which can add up to big money on these new vehicles.

when I ordered my new 2500hd I got the price I agreed to when it finally came in. I also got 10 free oil changes with tire rotation for taking so long to get it in.

I understand your frustration, but are you cutting off your nose to spite your face? You still need a truck, you'll probably order another one and wait again for delivery, and the price then will most likely be even higher.

I would not project future new vehicle prices and availability based on falling housing prices.

Me too.
Makes me happy I have a old basic truck I can fix and keep on
the road.

I have a forever truck, 2007 GMC work truck I bought new and had
it undercoated. I paid $13400 out the door price, including
sales taxes. I didn't realize at the time GM was in financial
trouble. My truck was the last year for the classic body, a low
rider. Glad I bought it when I did.
I don't use it like I used to. It's semi-retired.
I have to keep a charger on it to keep the battery topped off.

My truck was a service truck because I owned a rental property
13 miles away. I sold the rental property and very happy I don't
have to trailer a tractor and mower. Owned the property for 42
years.

I certainly wouldn't go back to that dealer anymore. A reputable dealer would have given you the agreement in writing in the beginning. I know it was out of their control to live up to the 2021 model but should have stuck to their agreement for the 2022.

My boss (electrician) bought a 1 yr old used 3/4 ton Dodge last year. He purposely avoided buying a diesel. Saved a lot of money initially on the purchase, , avoided buying DEF, costly emission repairs and maintenance and is a lot cheaper to fill a tank with gas here compared to diesel. Yes he looses some on the miles per gallon side but hes saving a lot in all other areas.

I also have a 2018 RAM 1500 4wd 5.7Hemi quad-cab I bought mid-January 2018, I get letters once a month from the dealer wanting me to buy a new truck, they never have anything I'd care for on the lot. Mine is going to turn over 11,000 miles later this AM, I don't drive a lot. Think I'm keeping what I have, it's paid for!
After over 38 years of driving Ford's two nearly new trucks, both about 2-3 years old, '67 F250 2wd, '78 F150 4wd, and an order-out 87 F150 4wd & '96 F-250 4wd Diesel 5-spd, I really like my Ram! Over 4-1/2 years later it still puts a smile on my face to drive it!
I've driven several older Dodges, Dad had a '67 D100 slant-6 3 on the tree, I chased parts one day in Boss's Luxury Adventurer D-100, big 400 V-8 & auto, and another D-100 fleet truck, 318-auto.

Thats great to hear! Were keeping ours for as long as we can also. I grew up in chevs and a couple of Fords but I still like the dodge better than the new ones. The 19 up Rams and now the new model Toyotas seem like theyre trying to mimic GMCs

I wouldn't really sweat it. Economic conditions are worsening as the year elapses. I own a manufacturing business and we are still experiencing long lead times for parts and materials. Prices seem to escalate by the hour. Orders are down. Customers are ordering a fraction of the machinery they did a year ago. I have very little debt and can weather the storm. I will try and take care of my people as long as I can. They are an irreplaceable asset... especially my senior fabricators and machinists. I would want cash in reserve and low debt levels right now. I think a storm is coming. Unless you can pay in cash, without undue burden, I would think twice before pulling the Cap X trigger.

Interest rates and the slowing economy are already starting to be felt at car dealers. The locals are all running adds that they now have new cars on the lots looking for buyers. The used market is falling also. Auction prices as been dropping slightly every week for the last two months. Specific models - like older pickups that get poor fuel economy (like the 2001 F250 with a V10 I just bought) are starting to take big hits. The housing market has already turned on a dime. Rental property that is coming up for auction tomorrow would have been hot property two months ago - we went to an open house for it and only one other person showed up.

In three months this is going to look like the good old days.

Went into a dealer about 10 years ago to look for a new pickup , I wanted to trade my moms car in after she passed away . First thing they told me they couldn't give us much for it as it was over 5 years old. After some figuring they want to give us less then what the tires were worth. I told them to forget it we and then they wouldn't give us the keys to the car back unless we bought the truck. After I threaten to call the police I finally got the keys back.

Never ever give the test drive keys back before you get yours back. Went through that years ago when they told us our keys were locked up in the service department after they checked it out and couldn't get to them till morning. Funny how that problem disappeared when we told them we were going home in the car we had test driven and they could come get it in the morning. We had our keys in less than five minuets.
