At the end of my rope

I need to re-rope my two Skinner mow conveyor systems. The 600 feet of new 1/4 rope has a diameter of .200. Amazingly, the rope that came with the system in 1988 measures .250. Is this just to be expected, like 6 ply tires that don't have 6 plies, rough cut 2X4's that aren't 2X4, and half gallons of ice cream that are 1.5 qt?

Bonus round: If anyone has tales to tell of the late, great Mr. Skinner or his inventions, feel free to hijack this thread.

There's a difference between "false advertising" and "shrinkflation."

Nobody has ever tried to claim a 1.5qt container of ice cream is a "half gallon." Only old people do to give them something to complain about.

Do you want to pay a lot more for the same size, or pay less more for a smaller size? You don't need to be eating that much ice cream.

If the manufacturer is still in business see if you can buy replacement rope from the manufacturer or buy from who ever is supplying those parts to the manufacturer now.

(quoted from post at 09:22:16 10/19/22) If the manufacturer is still in business see if you can buy replacement rope from the manufacturer or buy from who ever is supplying those parts to the manufacturer now.

But then you can't complain about how you bought the cheapest rope you could find, and surprise surprise, it was made cheaply.

Of course then you can complain about the manufacturer price gouging on parts...

It never ends. Nobody is ever happy.

After reading your title at the end of my rope
My first thought was that you were getting hung at the end of your rope.
Never heard of anyone getting hung in the middle of his rope.
Glad to hear you didn't get hung, especially hung with an old rope. I would insist on a new rope.. lol

How is thing for a hijack?

Yes. The conveyor carries small squares upward along the inside (preferred) or outside front or back wall of the barn. When the bales reach the peak they make a ninety degree turn and continue on another conveyor that runs the length of the barn. The ropes control a device that can be positioned to drop the bales anywhere in the mow.

Re-roping is going to be a pain. I would like the new rope to last forever so I don't ever have to do it again. On Monday, I drove a few miles to my favorite in business since the 1800's farm store, willing to pay extra for quality rope, but they didn't have what I needed. I came home from the store, bought the rope on ebay, and it was delivered this morning. I'm very happy with the delivery time, and if the rope does what it is supposed to do, I will learn to live with the missing .05 inch.

Funny you should say that. I have a friend that has worked as a professional cable puller coming to help me with this project. He has made no mention of such special cords, but I will ask him.

Another place to find good strong rope is a place that supplies the rope tree workers use to pull trees to guide them down. Those ropes aren't that big but will hold all a 1 ton tuck can pull and make it spin.

Dad put a Skinner mow conveyor in our 200' long barn about 1960. There were 3/4 pipes on each side that had to be locked diagonally under the opposite rail to tip the bales off the conveyor. No ropes involved. Setting the pipes for the first few loads with an empty mow below was nerve wracking.
Skinner Mfg was about 20 miles from me. One of his nephews, Chris, was on our county Farm Bureau board, until he was killed by a nutzoid driver. I had picked up a short Skinner conveyor that was intended for Chris, but he never got it.

You may want to look into Amsteel Blue rope. Used in marine applications. Very strong rope for its size. Can be found on ebay, amazon and other places.
