Baling

My hay basket, where the bale slides up and into the trailer, is about equal. Helping my neighbor or with his thrower setup, both will scatter a few bales, pluses and minuses.

An accumulator and grapple helps with the unloading and is better if you have the machinery and shed space for it.

HA HA - no video, but we are fortunate to have a barn we can pull the wagons into and out of the rain and sun for stacking another day.

An accumulator and grapple are nice, but it is an expensive investment, including the tractor to handle the grapple. It is also another trip out on the field. That is what is nice about the kicker wagons, one pass and the bales are off the field and parked in our barn for unloading later. Wagons are cheap too. For us - the money is spent, the die is cast and squares with a kicker until I cannot lift a square bale anymore - but I do have a project 4x4 round baler waiting in the wings...

When I was a kid we baled thousands of small square bales. Now days I know a few of people who want a few hundred small squares but I dont know anyone who wants a few thousand anymore.

I was spoiled by a NH bale wagon. Feed that baler as much as it would eat to get a good bale and not have a wagon behind. Our bale wagon had the side unload feature so when I was done baling I could go stack like a wild man to catch up to what Pa had in the barn already. Pa and I could do 5-800 easily in a day.
I would often help the neighbor who was a bachelor with a hired man. Best we did was 2100 with four guys, four kicker racks on a long day.

Either way we had to eat and milk somewhere in there.

In the late 80's dad made over 20,000 small square bales per year. Several years with a 24t and then we got a new 327. He sold hay to horse people. I still bale about 1500 bales a year with my 24t. Tom
